The Federal Capital Territory Police Command and operatives of the Department of State Services have killed a suspected kidnapper during a gun battle in Pegi community in the Kuje area council of Abuja.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, on Monday, said the clash occurred when the security operatives stormed the kidnappers’ hideout in the area.

She said the kidnappers were overpowered by the operatives, forcing the hoodlums to release their victims.

Adeh, in a statement, noted that seven victims were rescued.

“The police and the Department of State Services invaded a kidnappers’ hideout in the area, which led to a gun battle between them and the kidnappers. They fled when they could not match the firepower of the police and the DSS.

“One of them was shot, another was killed and many of them ran with gunshot injuries. We were able to rescue seven victims. The sum of N47,000 was recovered. One iPhone, one AK-47 rifle, 15 AK magazines, military camouflage, six mobile phones, hard drugs and charms were also recovered,” she added.

Meanwhile, the wife and daughters of an Abuja-based pastor who were abducted by hoodlums recently have regained their freedom.

“The kidnappers have contacted the family of Agbajor and asked them to pay N5m for his wife.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in Delta State, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the kidnap, adding that the incident happened in Edo State.

His Edo State counterpart, Chidi Nwabuzor, said from the records available at the State Command, there was no information on the incident.

“You know we transmit our records to Force Headquarters everyday. There is no such record before us. From the Command’s record, no such incident happened yesterday (Friday), so the police will not give account of anything unreported.

“It is only when an incident is reported that the police can act on it. In most cases, citizens are not aware of the powers to report incidents. So the record I have from the Command is that no such incident happened yesterday (Friday), today (Saturday) and even the day before yesterday (Thursday).”

Updated: Gunmen rape, kill polytechnic beauty queen in Ogun

A student of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Happiness Odeh, has been murdered after winning Miss MAPOLY on August 3.

The victim, an ND II student of Mass Communication, was reportedly kidnapped while on her way to Ipara, in Ode Remo of Ogun State, on Tuesday evening, by some gunmen who allegedly raped her before killing her.

The MAPOLY Students Union President, Sodiq Ajani, on Saturday confirmed the incident in Abeokuta.

Ajani in a statement he signed with the Public Relations Officer, Joy Okolie, said the deceased was kidnapped while she was going to visit a movie location.

“Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Students Union (MAPSU) announces the untimely death of Miss Happiness Odeh, a Mass Communication student of MAPOLY.

“According to reports, she was abducted along Iperu road to her destination. The deceased left Abeokuta three days ago to visit a movie location at Ipara, Ode-Remo, with the consent of her parents.

“Contrary to the rumours flying around, her death is not related to her status as the new Miss MAPOLY. She won the award on the 3rd of August and the movie location she attended has nothing to do with the beauty pageantry on campus.

“We commiserate with her family, friends and colleagues. May Almighty God grant us all the fortitude to bear this painful loss. Continue to rest in the bosom of the Lord,” the statement read.

The union president added that the murderers took away the victim’s phone.

The police, he said, had commenced investigations into the matter.

Ajani also said the body of the slain student had been deposited at the morgue of the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu.
