ADC Talks Stall as Former Kano Governor Awaits Clarity on Obi’s Candidacy
Negotiations surrounding the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition have stalled as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Kano State Governor and National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), delays his defection to the ADC amid uncertainty over Peter Obi’s presidential ticket for the 2027 general election.
Kwankwaso’s move to the ADC — a strategic opposition alliance reportedly involving Peter Obi, the former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, and other key figures — has been put on hold as his camp awaits confirmation that Obi will indeed be the ADC’s presidential flagbearer. Political insiders say this clarity is essential before Kwankwaso can formally commit.

Recent meetings in Abuja between ADC strategists and Kwankwaso’s representatives failed to produce a final agreement, with key sticking points including power-sharing arrangements and the guarantee of Obi’s candidacy within the coalition. Sources indicate that some northern leaders and former President Olusegun Obasanjo have advised Kwankwaso to hold off until definitive assurances are secured.
The ADC has not publicly confirmed the status of the talks. Its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said he was not directly involved with the committee handling negotiations with Kwankwaso’s camp. Analysts believe the resolution of this impasse could reshape Nigeria’s opposition ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly in the North-West, where Kwankwaso wields significant political influence.
Observers note that securing Kwankwaso’s support could strengthen the ADC’s regional presence and enhance Obi’s chances in a potential coalition-led bid for the presidency, making the outcome of the negotiations highly significant for Nigeria’s political landscape.
