Adeyanju Urges EFCC, DSS to Probe El-Rufai Over Alleged Corruption, Insecurity in Kaduna
Civil rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS) to launch an independent investigation into former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over allegations of corruption and the handling of insecurity during his administration.
In a statement released on Thursday, Adeyanju stressed that the anti-graft and intelligence agencies must carry out a thorough and impartial probe, insisting that accountability applies to all public officials, whether past or present. According to him, allegations bordering on financial misconduct, abuse of office, and questionable security decisions taken between 2015 and 2023 deserve serious scrutiny in the interest of transparency and national security.
Adeyanju urged the EFCC investigation to focus on contracts, public spending, and policy decisions executed during El-Rufai’s eight-year tenure as Kaduna governor. He maintained that if credible evidence of corruption or abuse of office exists, the former governor must provide explanations.

“I call on the EFCC and DSS to immediately investigate former Governor Nasir El-Rufai over allegations of corruption and his management of insecurity while in office. No one is above the law,” Adeyanju said. He further emphasized that anti-corruption agencies must not be swayed by political pressure or intimidation in carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.
On insecurity, Adeyanju asked the DSS probe to examine what he described as controversial security policies adopted during El-Rufai’s administration. Kaduna State experienced persistent security challenges during those years, including banditry, kidnappings, and communal clashes, particularly in parts of Southern Kaduna and other volatile areas.
He referenced public debates over the state government’s admission that it engaged in dialogue and made payments to certain armed groups in attempts to stem violence, describing such actions as serious national security concerns requiring independent review. “The DSS should investigate reports that his government engaged in controversial security arrangements, including alleged payments to violent actors,” he stated.
The activist also described as “strange” claims of political persecution reportedly made by El-Rufai in recent times, arguing that his administration was often accused of suppressing dissent. He alleged that several activists, religious leaders, and political commentators were detained, harassed, or intimidated during the former governor’s tenure, and referenced the unresolved disappearance of a prominent critic abducted in front of his family as a lingering concern from that period.
As of press time, Nasir El-Rufai has not publicly responded to the allegations or the call for investigation. The EFCC and DSS have also not confirmed whether any formal probe has been initiated. The development adds to ongoing political discussions surrounding the former Kaduna governor, who remains a significant figure in national affairs.
