The Lagos State Government has announced a fresh plan to close the Third Mainland Bridge from midnight Friday February 26 to midnight to early Sunday morning February 28.
The state Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Frederic Oladeinde, disclosed this in a statement issued in Lagos on Wednesday, explaining that the action was to enable the contractors to demobilise the superstructure of the bridge, ahead of the full reopening of the road.
He said the about 24-hour closure would enable the contractors to move out equipment used during the rehabilitation process of the bridge ahead of the full reopening of both the Oworonshoki and Adenij-bound lanes to traffic.
He said the closure was also necessary to demobilise the superstructure of the bridge, having completed the replacement of the 12 expansion joints.
The commissioner, therefore, advised motorists from Ogudu, Alapere and Gbagada to use Ikorodu Road, Jibowu and Yaba as alternative routes.
“While Iyana Oworoshoki-bound traffic from Lagos-Island, Iddo, Oyingbo, Adekunle and Yaba are enjoined to use Herbert Macaulay Way, Jibowu and Ikorodu road as alternative routes,” he said.
Oladeinde assured that traffic management personnel would be deployed along the affected routes to minimise and address any traffic impediments during the closure.
He appreciated the people of Lagos for their cooperation during the prolonged repair works on the bridge.
He said the bridge was now safe for use by all, adding that the inconveniences were necessary sacrifice to keep the road in good shape.
