Akpabio denies mocking Trump over Christian killings claim, labels viral quote false

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has strongly denied reports circulating on social media that he made disparaging remarks about U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments on the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

The viral post, which gained traction over the weekend, claimed Akpabio had mocked Trump and urged him to “focus on internal American challenges.” It also quoted the Senate President as saying Nigerians were “fully satisfied” with the country’s security situation—a statement that sparked widespread backlash online.

In a press release issued Monday, Akpabio’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, dismissed the claims as “entirely false, malicious, and intended to mislead the public.”

“The quote is a total falsehood, a product of mischief, and a desperate attempt to incite misunderstanding between Senator Godswill Akpabio and President Donald Trump, as well as between Nigeria and its international partners,” Eyiboh stated.

He emphasized that Akpabio “never made such a statement—publicly, privately, in writing, or in conversation,” and challenged those behind the post to provide any credible evidence to support their claims.

Eyiboh also condemned the use of a group photograph featuring Akpabio and other lawmakers, which was used to lend false credibility to the fabricated quote.

Describing the Senate President as “a statesman of global repute and a respected advocate of international friendship, diplomacy, and mutual respect among nations,” Eyiboh affirmed that Akpabio holds President Trump “in high regard as a historic figure and leader of a great nation.”

He further clarified that Akpabio “would never comment on internal matters of the United States, nor issue any statement that falls within the exclusive domain of Nigeria’s Executive arm of government or its foreign policy establishment.”

The statement concluded by condemning the viral post as a “clear act of digital recklessness” aimed at sowing confusion and damaging reputations, urging Nigerians and the international community to disregard it entirely.

The Senate President’s office has called for responsible media engagement and cautioned against the spread of misinformation in an already sensitive diplomatic climate.
