The 50th anniversary of Oyo State kicked off in Ibadan on a high-profile note, but the event was marked by the notable absence of two senior traditional rulers, the Alaafin of Oyo and the Soun of Ogbomoso. Governor Seyi Makinde presided over the ceremony at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, with dignitaries, political leaders, and the Olubadan of Ibadan in attendance. The week-long Oyo @50 celebration, themed “Consolidating the Legacy, Navigating the Present, and Reimagining the Future,” includes cultural exhibitions, health outreaches, public lectures, and awards recognizing key contributors to the state’s growth.

Observers suggest that the absence of the Alaafin, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, and the Soun, Oba Olaoye Ghandi, underscores tensions surrounding the recent rotational chairmanship of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, a move that the Alaafin reportedly disputes, claiming it undermines his traditional authority.

Critics argue that the rotational arrangement dilutes the historical prominence of the Alaafin, the most senior monarch in Oyo’s cultural hierarchy. Nonetheless, Governor Makinde emphasized inclusive governance and socio-economic development, urging all stakeholders to work together for the state’s next 50 years of progress.

During the ceremony, the seated Olubadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, honored past leaders and citizens who have shaped Oyo State’s socio-economic and cultural development, highlighting the importance of tradition alongside modern governance.
