Sharia Law Could Be Implemented in Oyo if Demanded, Says Adebayo Shittu
Former Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, has reignited debate in Oyo State by asserting that Sharia law can be introduced if genuinely demanded by the people, while urging critics, particularly Christians, to be tolerant.
Speaking in a recent interview, Shittu argued that opposition to Sharia law in the South‑West is often fueled by religious intolerance rather than constitutional concerns. He emphasised that non-Muslims will not be forced to comply with Sharia, and that its implementation would only apply to willing Muslim communities.

This statement comes amid wider discussions on establishing Sharia arbitration panels in parts of the South‑West, including Oyo, Lagos, and Ekiti states. Supporters argue these panels help Muslims settle personal matters like marriage, divorce, and inheritance within the framework of their faith, without infringing on constitutional rights.
However, critics warn that introducing Sharia in a religiously diverse region could undermine secular governance and threaten interfaith harmony. Some traditional leaders and Christian groups have called for caution, emphasising the need to protect minority rights and social cohesion.
The Oyo State government, led by Governor Seyi Makinde, has not formally adopted Sharia law and continues to stress adherence to the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees religious freedom. The ongoing debate highlights the delicate balance between religious law and secular governance in Nigeria’s multi-faith society.
