Amaechi Rejects VP Rumours, Insists He Is Running for President in 2027

Amaechi Rejects VP Rumours, Insists He Is Running for President in 2027

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has dismissed circulating claims that he is considering serving as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the 2027 presidential election.

Amaechi, through his media aide David Iyofor, reaffirmed that he has no interest in the vice-presidential slot and will not contest under anyone’s ticket. Iyofor stressed that the former Rivers State governor is committed solely to pursuing his 2027 presidential ambition.

He made it clear that politicians should stop associating his name with vice-presidential arrangements, insisting that Amaechi believes it is Southern Nigeria’s turn to produce the next president. He is advancing that mandate under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

According to Iyofor:
Amaechi is not seeking to be running mate to anybody. He is running to be President of Nigeria and nothing else.”

His reaction followed comments attributed to Atiku’s ally, Dele Momodu, who suggested that the former vice president might consider Amaechi as a running mate if talks with other blocs fail — a statement that triggered widespread political speculation.

Amaechi’s stance aligns with his previous declarations within the ADC. In August, he announced that he would not step down for any aspirant during the party’s primary, insisting that delegates, not negotiations, must decide the party’s flag bearer.

Months earlier, he stated his willingness to serve as a one-term president if elected, emphasising the need for political stability and fair power rotation.

Amaechi, who came second behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the APC 2022 presidential primary, has since moved to the ADC, where his renewed ambition continues to shape opposition politics ahead of 2027.

Meanwhile, the ADC leadership has maintained that its coalition — including Atiku, Peter Obi, and Amaechi — remains united despite individual aspirations, assuring that internal ambitions will not fracture the alliance before the 2027 elections.
