Amaewhule, Other Wike Loyalists Sweep Rivers APC Reps Primaries
Amaewhule, Other Wike Loyalists Sweep Rivers APC Reps Primaries
Loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, swept the All Progressives Congress House of Representatives primaries in Rivers State on Saturday, consolidating their influence within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The primaries, conducted across the 13 federal constituencies in the state, produced several prominent figures aligned with Wike’s political structure, including Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule.
The results were officially announced at the APC secretariat in Port Harcourt by the Chairman of the House of Representatives Primary Election Committee, Wahab Owokoniran, who described the exercise as peaceful and orderly despite political tensions in the state.
Amaewhule, one of the leading figures in the pro-Wike camp during the prolonged Rivers political crisis, emerged unopposed as the APC candidate for Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency 1 after polling 17,968 votes.
Declaring the result, Owokoniran said, “Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule having satisfied the requirement of the APC constitution and guidelines and scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner.”
The outcome of the primaries further highlighted the growing dominance of Wike’s allies within the Rivers APC amid the lingering political rift between the former governor and his estranged successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Before the primaries, the party screened aspirants and reportedly disqualified four individuals linked to Governor Fubara, including three serving members of the House of Representatives, a move that triggered criticism from some political stakeholders in the state.
Only 20 aspirants were eventually cleared to participate in the exercise.

Among other notable winners was Dumnamene Dekor, who retained influence in Khana/Gokana Federal Constituency by defeating Israel Ngbuelo with 17,073 votes against 1,220.
Cyril Hart clinched the APC ticket for Degema-Bonny Federal Constituency after polling 7,203 votes to defeat Philemon Tombodiea, who secured 1,020 votes.
Felix Nweke emerged unopposed in Eleme/Tai/Oyigbo Federal Constituency with 18,605 votes, while Isobo Solomon defeated Luke Enerine in Akuku-Toru/Asari-Toru Federal Constituency after polling 11,303 votes against 954.
In Ahoada West/Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Federal Constituency, Chukwuemele Obuzor won unopposed with 15,626 votes.
Fredrick Apiafi also secured victory unopposed in Andoni-Opobo-Nkoro Federal Constituency after polling 8,550 votes.
Other winners included Chibuzor Nwamaka in Etche-Omuma Federal Constituency, Joy Nyebuchi in Ikwerre-Emuoha Federal Constituency, Blessing Amadi in Port Harcourt Constituency 2, Linda Steward in Okrika/Ogu-Bolo Federal Constituency and Solomon Bob in Abua-Odual/Ahoada East Federal Constituency.
Igwe Precious equally emerged candidate for Port Harcourt Federal Constituency after polling 5,885 votes as the sole aspirant.
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, including the Rivers Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Johnson Sinikiem, monitored the exercise at the party secretariat.
The committee temporarily suspended proceedings twice while awaiting collation of results from some constituencies, including Port Harcourt, Khana/Gokana, Akuku-Toru/Asari-Toru and Degema-Bonny.
Following the exercise, Owokoniran praised party members for conducting what he described as a violence-free primary despite widespread perceptions of political instability in Rivers State.
“This is the final declaration. We have declared 13 out of 13 federal constituency results. We want to let the whole world know that the election was conducted in a very peaceful atmosphere,” he stated.
He added that there was no rancour or violence during the process, contrary to fears that political tensions in Rivers could disrupt the primaries.
The Rivers APC Publicity Secretary, Chibike Ikenga, also commended party members for maintaining order and urged victorious aspirants to remain humble ahead of the general elections.
“That you have won today doesn’t mean you have won the general election,” Ikenga said, while assuring aggrieved aspirants that the party would work towards reconciliation and unity.
Political observers noted that most of the successful aspirants are associated with the “Rainbow Coalition” or “Joint Coalition,” a political alliance reportedly designed to unite APC and PDP supporters in Rivers State in support of President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
The latest development is expected to further deepen the power struggle between the camps loyal to Wike and Governor Fubara, whose political relationship collapsed barely months after the governor assumed office in 2023.
Analysts believe the primaries have strengthened Wike’s hold on the APC structure in Rivers State while raising fresh questions about Fubara’s political future ahead of the next election cycle.

2027: Atiku Names Kenneth Okonkwo New Spokesperson
2027: Atiku Names Kenneth Okonkwo New Spokesperson
Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar, has appointed actor-turned-politician and lawyer Kenneth Okonkwo as his official spokesperson, in a move seen as strengthening the party’s communication strategy ahead of the next general election.
Okonkwo announced his appointment in a statement shared on his verified X account on Thursday, expressing gratitude to Atiku for the confidence reposed in him and pledging to discharge the responsibility with wisdom and dedication.
“I give God all the glory for being appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his spokesperson. I thank His Excellency for the immense confidence reposed in me,” Okonkwo said.
The former Labour Party presidential campaign spokesperson described the appointment as evidence of Atiku’s leadership style, saying the former vice president prefers dialogue, consultation and compromise whenever disagreements arise within the party.
“Rather than take offence at associates for expressing genuine reservations about any action taken, His Excellency always opts for dialogue and compromise that engender solutions to problems,” he stated.
According to Okonkwo, his concerns over the political interests of the South-East were addressed during discussions with Atiku and other leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
He explained that the consultations provided assurances that the interests of the South-East would be protected within the framework of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the prevailing political realities.

“At a dialogue with His Excellency and other well-meaning members of the African Democratic Congress, the interests of the South-East were discussed and guaranteed within the existing challenges posed by the Electoral Act, 2026, and the realities on the ground,” he added.
Okonkwo also acknowledged the contributions of Dr. Kashim Imam, former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu, and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Dr. Ekene Onwuka, for their roles in promoting reconciliation and strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 general election.
He further thanked his family, supporters and friends for their encouragement and prayers.
“I still covet your prayers for wisdom, courage, provision and protection needed to carry out this challenging responsibility, which will usher in a glorious and great Nigeria,” he said.
The appointment comes weeks after Okonkwo openly criticised the ADC’s vice-presidential selection process.
He had argued that choosing a running mate from the South-South would further deepen what he described as the political marginalisation of the South-East, the only geopolitical zone yet to produce either a President or Vice President since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.
Despite his reservations, the ADC later announced former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate after the former vice president secured the party’s presidential ticket.
Okonkwo’s acceptance of the spokesperson role suggests that consultations within the party have helped bridge earlier differences over the composition of the presidential ticket.
A lawyer, actor and seasoned political communicator, Okonkwo previously served as a spokesperson for the Labour Party presidential campaign and has remained an influential voice in Nigeria’s opposition politics. His appointment is expected to bolster Atiku’s public engagement and media outreach as preparations for the 2027 presidential election gather momentum.

Court Takes Over Taraba APC Reps Primary Dispute
Court Takes Over Taraba APC Reps Primary Dispute
A fresh legal battle has erupted within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Taraba State as the contest for the party’s ticket for the Takum/Donga/Ussa/Yangtu Federal Constituency shifts from the ballot box to the courtroom, with one aspirant seeking to overturn the outcome of the primary election.
Hon. Audu Israel Tseaga has approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, asking the court to nullify the APC primary conducted for the constituency, alleging that the exercise was marred by serious irregularities.
In the suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1128/2026, Tseaga named the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the APC and Rt. Hon. Mark Bako Useni as defendants.
At the proceedings, Justice Inyang Ekwo granted leave for the originating processes to be served on Rt. Hon. Mark Bako Useni and subsequently adjourned the matter for the hearing of the Motion on Notice.
Tseaga is urging the court to invalidate the primary election and declare that he is the rightful candidate of the APC for the Takum/Donga/Ussa/Yangtu Federal Constituency in the 2027 general election.
The lawsuit marks the beginning of what is expected to be a fierce legal contest over the party’s ticket, with the outcome likely to shape the APC’s fortunes in one of Taraba State’s key federal constituencies.

2027: Gov Kefas Names Veteran Journalist Emmanuel Bello Campaign Spokesman
Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has appointed veteran journalist and media strategist, Emmanuel Bello, as the spokesman for his 2027 governorship campaign organisation, signalling the commencement of preparations ahead of the next governorship election.
The appointment was announced in a statement issued by the Director-General of the Campaign Organisation, Danladi Baido, who said Bello would oversee the campaign’s communication strategy and serve as its official spokesperson.
Bello brings decades of experience in journalism, public communication and government media management to the role. Before his latest appointment, he served as Commissioner for Information under two different administrations in Taraba State, where he played key roles in shaping government communication and public engagement.
He began his journalism career as a reporter with the Daily Trust newspaper before moving on to work with several leading media organisations, including Leadership Newspapers, THISDAY and ARISE News, where he served until recently.
Bello currently serves as the Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communications to Governor Kefas, a position in which he has been responsible for coordinating the governor’s media relations and digital communication strategy.
