Angela Okorie Remanded In Suleja Prison Over Alleged Cyberstalking, Defamation Of Mercy Johnson-Okojie

Niger State / Abuja — January 29, 2026

Nollywood actress Angela Okorie has been remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre in Niger State following her arraignment before a Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations of cyberstalking and criminal defamation involving fellow actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie.

Okorie was brought before the court by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Cybercrime Unit, where she was charged with three counts bordering on conspiracy, cyberstalking and defamation, contrary to provisions of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act, 2015.

According to the charge sheet, the actress allegedly made offensive and defamatory statements against Mercy Johnson-Okojie on social media platforms, including Instagram and TikTok, with the intent to harass, intimidate and damage the reputation of the complainant. The prosecution claimed that the posts caused psychological distress and reputational harm, prompting the petition that led to police investigation.

At the court session, Angela Okorie pleaded not guilty to all the charges read to her. Her legal team made an oral application for bail, arguing that the defendant is a well-known public figure with a verifiable address and no history of jumping bail. However, the prosecution opposed the request, insisting that a formal bail application was required under the law.

In his ruling, the presiding judge declined the oral bail request and ordered that Okorie be remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre pending the hearing of a substantive bail application. The court subsequently adjourned proceedings to January 30, 2026, for the bail hearing and further directions.

The case has drawn widespread attention across the entertainment industry and on social media, reigniting debates around cyberbullying, online defamation, and the use of Nigeria’s Cybercrime Act to regulate digital conduct among public figures. Legal analysts note that the matter could become a test case on the limits of free speech on social media in Nigeria’s fast-growing digital space.

As of the time of filing this report, Mercy Johnson-Okojie has not made any public statement on the court proceedings, while supporters and critics of Angela Okorie continue to express mixed reactions online.

The outcome of the bail hearing is expected to determine whether the actress will regain temporary freedom as the trial proceeds or remain in custody pending further hearings.
