NELFUND Extends Student Loan Application Deadline to Feb 27 for 2025/2026 Session

NELFUND Extends Student Loan Application Deadline to Feb 27 for 2025/2026 Session

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has extended the application deadline for the 2025/2026 academic session student loan to February 27, 2026, giving prospective beneficiaries additional time to complete and submit their applications. The extension moves the earlier closing date of January 31, 2026, following concerns that some eligible applicants may be unable to meet the initial deadline.

In a statement issued by the Fund, NELFUND explained that the decision was taken to ensure that no eligible Nigerian student is denied access to the loan scheme due to time constraints or technical challenges encountered during the application process. The agency said the move aligns with its mandate to promote inclusive and equitable access to education financing across the country.

Speaking on the extension, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NELFUND, Akintunde Sawyerr, said the Fund recognises that some applicants require additional time to complete documentation and verification. He noted that the extension reflects the agency’s commitment to supporting Nigerian students and removing financial barriers to higher education.

The Fund urged students who are yet to apply, as well as those with incomplete applications, to take full advantage of the extended deadline by ensuring that all required information is properly submitted before February 27. NELFUND also advised applicants to rely on its official communication channels for updates and to contact the agency directly for clarification where necessary.

The additional 30-day window is expected to ease pressure on applicants seeking to benefit from the Federal Government-backed student loan scheme, which was introduced to expand access to tertiary education and reduce the financial burden on students and their families. Education stakeholders believe the extension could significantly boost participation, especially among students who experienced delays during the application process.
