Anti-Tinubu coalition: ‘North will unveil candidate, party soon’
Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Northern political leaders, under the aegis of the National Political Consultative Group, NPCG (North), have agreed to present a single presidential candidate to challenge President Bola Tinubu.
The leaders, who also resolved to unveil a political platform for this purpose, urged Nigerians to sanction governors and other elected officials who recently endorsed Tinubu for a second term, without prior consultation with their constituents.
These resolutions were reached at the end of a meeting held by the group, Sunday evening, in Abuja.
Those present at the meeting included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami; former Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi; the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, and former Interior Minister, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who sent a representative.
The NPCG, in a communiqué by the group’s Chairman, Mr. Babachir Lawal, expressed deep concern about “the worsening security situation, which has aggravated poverty, loss of lives and property, unemployment, and destitution throughout the Northern region.
Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, said: “The group was founded to unite Northern political leaders, forge strong relationships, and work as a united interest group, preferably within a political party framework.

“Delegates acknowledged that insecurity has reached unprecedented levels under the current administration, worsening poverty, hunger, destitution, and causing a near collapse of education at the primary and secondary levels.
“Delegates agreed that the three major drivers of any society are fear, emotions, and knowledge, and resolved that the North must not be driven by fear or emotions, but by knowledge.
“They resolved that the North must proceed with a united front in its political choices to ensure the region secures maximum benefits from national political participation.
“They urged for the immediate unveiling of the political platform through which the region’s interests will be pursued.
“The group agreed on the need to extend its initiatives to all 19 Northern states and the FCT through the provision of an appropriate operational template.
“It resolved that the region must prioritise and promote industrialisation and high productivity across all sectors to escape the current economic crisis. It emphasised that building a united North must involve addressing issues of equity, fairness, and justice, both within and among states.

Tinubu Accused of Using Wike to Fuel PDP Turmoil, Says Emma Ogidi
Tinubu Accused of Using Wike to Fuel PDP Turmoil, Says Emma Ogidi
The South-South caretaker chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Emma Ogidi, has accused President Bola Tinubu of using FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to destabilize the opposition party. Ogidi made the remarks on Channels Television’s Politics Today, claiming that Wike and the faction led by Samuel Anyanwu were driving unprecedented internal turmoil within the PDP.
Ogidi described the behavior of the expelled members as “overboard”, saying: “No, no, this type of behavior… I’ve never seen that kind of behavior. It’s gone overboard. What they’re doing is overboard. Wike, Samuel Anyanwu and the rest. It’s overboard.”
He emphasized that although the PDP has experienced internal disagreements in the past, the current crisis is on an entirely different scale. Ogidi insisted that Wike, Anyanwu, and others remain expelled until a court rules otherwise, adding that those challenging party decisions must be prepared to defend their actions in court.

Ogidi’s comments come after the PDP National Convention in Ibadan on 15 November 2025, where Wike, Anyanwu, former Ekiti Governor Ayo Fayose, and ten others were expelled. The expulsions were moved by former PDP National Vice-Chairman Olabode George and seconded by Bauchi PDP Chairman Samaila Buga, with PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman Bala Mohammed putting it to a voice vote.
The Wike-led faction had attempted to halt the convention via the courts, but a high court ruling in Oyo allowed the convention to proceed. Wike’s faction described the event as a “jamboree”, promising to continue strengthening a united PDP.
Ogidi further alleged that President Tinubu was exploiting the internal PDP tensions through Wike’s ministerial position. “This APC government, this president we have, he’ll do whatever it takes to ensure that there’s only one party in this country. He’s the one behind it,” Ogidi said.
Despite the crisis, Ogidi insisted that the PDP is indestructible, arguing that the party’s true strength lies with grassroots supporters rather than political heavyweights. He dismissed claims that the PDP had lost credibility, stating: “The big men can go. PDP is nobody’s party… It’s the people’s democratic party.”
Ogidi concluded by affirming the PDP’s future as the face of democracy and opposition in Nigeria, emphasizing adherence to party rules and unity among members.

APC Strengthens Position Ahead of 2027 Elections With 26 Governors on Board
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strengthened its political position with Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas officially joining the ruling party and the imminent defection of Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, bringing the party’s total number of governors to 26.
According to a source within the APC National Working Committee (NWC), Mutfwang — elected on the platform of a factionalised Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — has concluded plans to formally switch allegiance. He recently met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at Aso Villa, Abuja, after informing APC National Chairman Prof Nentawe Yilwatda of his decision.

The source clarified that speculations suggesting resistance from Yilwatda to Mutfwang’s defection were unfounded. “The governor, who had always reiterated his commitment to the PDP, has finally decided. He informed the chairman last Tuesday, and the chairman took him to the president on Sunday. He will be received into the party very soon,” the official said.
Meanwhile, Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State is already being treated as a full-fledged APC member, ahead of his formal reception rally. “We now have 26 governors in APC, with Kefas on board. He only postponed his reception because of sensitivity to the national mood,” the source added.
The defections signal a strategic consolidation for the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections, further weakening the opposition PDP in key states.

Accord Party Exposes Alleged APC Scheme to Disqualify Opposition Ahead of Osun 2026 Election
Accord Party Exposes Alleged APC Scheme to Disqualify Opposition Ahead of Osun 2026 Election
The Osun State chapter of the Accord Party has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to destabilise opposition parties through frivolous lawsuits and alleged manipulation of the judiciary, ahead of the 2026 Osun governorship election.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Osogbo, the state chairman of Accord Party, Pastor Victor Akande, condemned what he described as a coordinated effort by a powerful APC faction to secure ex parte orders and default judgments aimed at disrupting the internal processes of rival political parties.
“This move by a caucus within the state APC is intended to undermine democratic processes ahead of the forthcoming gubernatorial election,” Akande said, alleging that the ruling party had adopted a strategy of filing meritless court cases to prevent other parties from presenting candidates.

Akande further claimed that a prominent APC leader was invoking the President’s name to coerce individuals into participating in these undemocratic activities. He also alleged that the APC was responsible for the internal disqualification of seven out of nine governorship aspirants within the party to favour a preferred candidate.
Highlighting a recent lawsuit filed by Oliver Bitrus through counsel Daniel Edeachi, Akande described the action as part of a deliberate attempt to mislead the courts and destabilise opposition parties, vowing to seek accountability through the Legal Practitioners’ Disciplinary Committee (LPDC).
“This represents a dangerous escalation in the politics of manipulation and desperation and poses a serious threat to the credibility of the electoral process in Osun State,” he said.
Akande urged civil society organisations, democratic institutions, political stakeholders, and the public to remain vigilant against any efforts to erode the democratic space, assuring that Accord Party would remain united and focused on concluding its primary election in preparation for the August 8, 2026 governorship poll.
