APC to Kwankwaso: Ask Kano gov to account for trucks of FG palliatives

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has rebuked the leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Sen. Rabi’u Kwankwaso, for criticising the method adopted by the Federal Government for the distribution of palliatives to ensure that the foodstuff reach the intended beneficiaries.

In a statement posted on his X handle, the Chairman of the party, Prince Abdullahi Abbas, said the Federal Government is committed to alleviating hunger in the country, but that the NNPP government in Kano State is frustrating the efforts.

Abbas also faulted Kwankwaso for saying that the distribution exercise was solely left for the APC.

“The reconstituted committee by the federal government is under the leadership of the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, with membership from the All Progressives Congress (APC), New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Senator Rufa’i Hanga (NNPP), Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila (NNPP), members of the House of Representatives, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam, the state deputy governor, traditional and religious leaders, among others,” he said.

He said the bipartisan committee had worked out detailed modalities for the distribution of the palliatives to prevent incidences of diversion and ensure that the beneficiaries were truly the most needy members of the public.

According to him, the federal government’s decision to devise a new method of sharing the palliatives is informed by President Bola Tinubu’s dissatisfaction with the previous exercise.

He said President Tinubu had approved several palliative measures for poor households and the vulnerable, but that the people assigned for the distribution of the commodities were diverting them.

He alleged that “the scandalous escapades that enmeshed senior officials of the NNPP government brought to fore how the palliatives could not reach the targeted poor and the vulnerable.”

The chairman further alleged that in spite of the Kano State Government’s warning that it would deal with anyone found involved in the diversion of the palliatives, the Managing Director of the state Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO), Dr. Tukur Dayyabu Minjibir, was found to be involved in “an inappropriate sale of grains belonging to the state government.”

He also stated that a Senior Special Assistant to the Cabinet Office, Tasi’u Al’Amin Roba, was arrested for alleged diversion of the state’s palliatives.

“He was arrested repackaging the rice and maize at the warehouse at Sharada.”

Abbas alleged that only recently, a large portion of rice meant for distribution to the poor was looted at the private residence of the Chief of Staff, Government House, Kano, Shehu Wada Sagagi and that the matter is under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC).

The chairman therefore called on Kwankwaso “to tell his anointed governor to launch an investigation into these acts of irresponsibility, by ensuring that perpetrators account for all the missing palliatives and also prosecuted.”

He also asserted that in addition to contradicting figures on the exercise, the 2024 Annual Ramadan Feeding Programme served poor quality meals prompting Gov. Abba Yusuf to announce that he had lost confidence in the people he entrusted with responsibilities.

On the issue of posting and reposting of directors of the Department of State Service, the chairman said the decision was in President Tinubu’s special consideration for Kano and commitment to ensuring that only diligent heads of security agencies are posted to the state.

He observed that throughout the two-term administration of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Kano remained relatively peaceful with no incidence of violence.

“The prevailing insecurity in the state is the handiwork of the NNPP government, because it encouraged and supported the violent youth. In months leading to the 2023 election, they were always happy with what they did,” he added.

NNPC has no right setting price of Dangote petrol – Falana

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, says the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, do not have the power to fix the price of Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol, for the Dangote Refinery after deregulation.

Falana said the NNPCL action violated the Petroleum Industry Act, PIA, which stipulated that the price of petrol must be determined by the market forces

In a statement on Tuesday, the legal luminary said it was an aberration for the NNPCL to peg the price of petrol produced and refined in Nigeria at 950 per litre.

“On September 5, 2024, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) stated that foreign exchange (forex) illiquidity had been a significant factor influencing the fluctuation in prices of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) governed by unrestrained market forces, as provided for in the Petroleum Industry Act, PIA.

“The NNPCL was explaining the pump price of PMS imported into the country at the material time. Specifically, the Executive Vice President of Downstream NNPC Ltd Mr. Adedapo Segun, explained that Section 205 of the PIA, which established NNPC Ltd, stipulated that petroleum prices were determined by free market forces.

“But contrary to the well-publicised statement, the NNPCL has fixed the price of PMS produced by the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Company Limited. The action of the NNPCL is a violent contravention of section 205 of the PIA, which stipulates that the prices of petroleum products shall be determined by market forces.

“Furthermore, since the petrol sold by Dangote is not imported into the country but produced at the Lekki Economic Free Trade Zone, the NNPCL cannot justify the sale of petrol at N950 per litre without freight cost, lightering cost, jetty depot fees, storage fees, foreign exchange costs, NPA charges: NIMASA charges, Customs duties etc,” he said.

Falana’s outburst followed the commencement of PMS lifting by the NNPCL from the Dangote Refinery.

You would recall that as soon as lifting commenced, NNPCL announced that the product would sell for N950 per litre in Lagos State and its environs, and above N1,000 per litre in states such as Borno.

Reacting, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, on Monday, criticised NNPCL, saying it was not right for petrol lifted from the Dangote Refinery to cost higher than imported ones

Coffee prices double in Nigeria after global supply disruptions

Nigeria is feeling the impact of the global coffee crisis as futures prices surge by over 30% due to severe supply disruptions caused by drought in Brazil, the world’s largest Arabica coffee producer.

In Nigeria, coffee prices have doubled in 2024, with popular brands like Nescafe and TopCafe experiencing significant hikes.

For instance, “Nescafe 3 in 1” spiked to N34,000 per carton in August, up from N28,000 in May, and a steep rise from N18,000 last year.

The rainfall shortage in Brazil, which began in April, has led to a sharp decline in coffee production, sparking a global rush to secure supplies.

This has driven up coffee futures, with U.S. Coffee Futures and Arabica Futures both soaring by more than 30% in 2024, impacting markets worldwide, including Nigeria.
