Armed bandits abduct eight residents in Kano’s Tsanyawa LGA amid rising rural insecurity

Tsanyawa, Kano State — At least eight residents of Biresawa village in Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State were abducted by armed bandits late Monday night, sources confirmed, escalating fears in the region.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers struck between 11pm and midnight, moving stealthily and targeting households with precision. According to one local source, the abductees included two men and six women, and their current whereabouts remain unknown.

A relative of the victims, Kabiru Usman, described the harrowing ordeal, saying the gunmen infiltrated the village from neighboring Tsundu village. “They came on foot, armed with guns. They kidnapped my wife, Umma; my 17-year-old daughter, Fati; my brother’s wife, and two other women. We tried to resist, but our weapons were no match,” Usman said.

Reports indicate that multiple communities, including Sarmawa, Yan Chibi, and Gano villages in Tsanyawa LGA, were attacked the same night. Witnesses from Yan Chibi said approximately 50 bandits on motorcycles stormed their community, firing into the air and abducting mostly women.

Local vigilante groups confirmed prior intelligence of suspicious movements, but efforts to intercept the bandits failed as they reportedly escaped toward Katsina State.

The spate of attacks has caused mass displacement, with many families abandoning homes in Tsanyawa, Shanono, and Bagwai LGAs, seeking refuge in towns like Faruruwa.

The Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, had not responded to requests for comment at the time of filing.

This latest bandit attack in Kano State follows similar incidents in the region, including the Yan Kwada village abduction in Shanono LGA, where five women, including nursing mothers, were kidnapped shortly after a joint military operation neutralized 19 suspected bandits.

Communities across rural Kano State remain on high alert as authorities face increasing pressure to restore security and prevent further abductions by armed bandits.
