Atiku’s Son Abba Abubakar Joins APC, Backs Tinubu’s 2027 Re-Election Bid
In a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, Abba Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) and pledged support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Abba announced his defection in Abuja, where he was formally received by senior APC leaders. He said his decision was driven by confidence in the ruling party’s direction and the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which he described as critical to Nigeria’s economic and political stability.

As part of the move, Abba disclosed that his political structure would now work within the APC to mobilise grassroots support for Tinubu’s second-term bid. Party leaders welcomed him, describing his defection as a significant boost to the party’s fortunes ahead of the next election cycle.
The development has sparked widespread reactions across the political landscape, given Abba’s close ties to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) through his father, who was the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections. Commenting on the development, Atiku Abubakar described his son’s defection as a personal decision, stressing that it does not affect his own political position.
Political analysts say the high-profile defection underscores ongoing cross-carpeting within Nigeria’s political space as politicians and influential figures reposition themselves ahead of 2027. Observers also note that such moves could influence party strategies, alliances, and voter perceptions in the build-up to the elections.
