IGP Takes Over Chris Okafor Case as Lagos Police Halt Investigation

IGP Takes Over Chris Okafor Case as Lagos Police Halt Investigation

The Nigeria Police Force has suspended the Lagos State Police Command’s investigation into allegations against Pastor Chris Okafor, as the case has now been taken over by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) for a centralised probe.

The Lagos Command confirmed that the matter has been transferred to the Zone 2 Police Command, acting under the supervision of the IGP, to avoid duplication of efforts and ensure a comprehensive investigation into the allegations of sexual assault, rape, and other related offences circulating on social media.

According to police sources, the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, initially commenced investigations following public complaints and petitions. However, the inquiry was suspended after complainants reportedly failed to present themselves for further statements, prompting the need for intervention at the federal level.

Pastor Chris Okafor, founder of the Mountain of Liberation and Miracles Ministries, had earlier surrendered to the police and was released on personal recognisance to allow investigations to proceed without obstruction.

The police explained that the IGP-led investigation will now handle all aspects of the case, with the Lagos Command expected to cooperate fully and reopen its inquiry only if required after the federal probe is concluded.

Meanwhile, Okafor’s legal representatives have dismissed the allegations as false and defamatory, describing the accusations as a trial by social media aimed at damaging his reputation. Reports have also emerged of possible out-of-court resolution talks involving some parties connected to the controversy.

The case has continued to generate nationwide attention, raising broader conversations around accountability, law enforcement transparency, and the handling of high-profile allegations in Nigeria.
