Baba-Ahmed Slams US Airstrikes in Sokoto, Says Action Humiliates Nigerian Military
Former spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has criticised the recent United States airstrikes on terrorist targets in Sokoto State, describing the operation as a humiliation of the Nigerian military and a violation of Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Speaking in an interview with Peoples Gazette on Friday, Baba-Ahmed argued that the US military action on Nigerian soil undermines the country’s right to defend itself and weakens the morale of security forces constitutionally mandated to protect the nation.
“Now our country’s right to defend itself has been handed over by our leadership to the U.S.,” he said. “Our military assets sworn to protect and defend us have been further diminished by the action of the US. They will be right if they feel humiliated.”
On Thursday, US President Donald Trump announced via social media that American forces had carried out airstrikes against suspected terrorist targets in North-West Nigeria. The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs later confirmed that the operation was conducted in collaboration with Nigeria.

However, Baba-Ahmed described the strikes as a gross violation of Nigeria’s sovereignty, accusing the United States of pursuing hidden interests and deepening religious divisions within the country.
“The real issue is not where, within the territory of Nigeria the US assault landed. What is important is that our sovereignty, dignity and rights have been violated by an external interest which claims it is acting in the interest of the Nigerian Christian community,” he said.
He further alleged that the United States has consistently contributed to religious tensions in Nigeria rather than helping the country develop internal capacity to confront terrorism and banditry.
Baba-Ahmed warned that continued reliance on foreign military intervention could expose Nigeria to neo-colonial influence, insisting that only Nigerians can successfully defeat insecurity in the country.
“The U.S. does not have a foot in our door. It has the whole room. Only Nigerians will win this war against our killers. Otherwise, we become double victims—of terrorists and of powerful countries interested in a weakened Nigeria they can dominate,” he stated.
Meanwhile, prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi also condemned the airstrikes, describing them as a targeted action against Islam.
“The attacks are symbolic of a harbinger of a neo-Crusade war against Islam. Attacking Sokoto, where over 90 per cent are Muslims, while the major terror threats are elsewhere, raises serious questions,” Gumi said in a statement on Friday.
The airstrikes have continued to generate intense national debate over foreign military intervention, sovereignty, and Nigeria’s long-term security strategy.
