Bello Turji Threats Spark Mass Displacement in Eastern Sokoto
Residents of eastern Sokoto State, particularly Tidibale in Isa Local Government Area, are fleeing their homes in large numbers following fresh threats issued by notorious bandit leader Bello Turji. The threats come amid rising insecurity, just days after at least five persons, including former councillor and PDP House of Assembly candidate Igbabe Ochi, were killed in a midnight attack in Otobi Akpa, Benue State.
Locals report that Turji’s warning, after months of relative silence, has triggered panic, forcing families to abandon homes and farmlands for safety in Isa, Gidan Hamisu, and neighboring Shinkafi in Zamfara State. Many villagers described the threats as an attempt by Turji to reassert dominance in the region. Women, children, and the elderly are among the displaced, with farmers forced to leave crops behind ahead of the planting season.

Some communities in Shinkafi LGA have reportedly entered into truces with Turji, pledging non-confrontation as a survival strategy. Analysts warn that these truces reshape the geography of fear, concentrating bandit activities in areas like Isa, Sabon Birni, Goronyo, Wurno, and Rabah LGAs that have not agreed to any truce.
In a similar wave of violence, armed herders allegedly attacked Otobi Akpa community in Otukpo LGA, Benue State, killing at least five people, including Igbabe Ochi. The attackers reportedly targeted a provision shop, looted food items, and fled into the forest when confronted by youths. The Benue State Civil Protection Guards confirmed the attack.
Meanwhile, in a boost to Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and banditry, the United States government delivered critical military supplies to Nigeria. The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed the handover in Abuja, highlighting the ongoing US-Nigeria security partnership. Former senator Shehu Sani praised the support as timely, urging other nations to contribute to Nigeria’s security operations.
The combined threats from Bello Turji, attacks by armed herders, and the resulting mass displacement of residents underline the urgent need for strengthened security measures in northern Nigeria.
