Brake Failure Causes Tomato Truck Crash on Otedola Bridge; Family Escapes Unhurt
A mini truck carrying tomatoes lost control on Thursday around noon on the Otedola Bridge along the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, narrowly avoiding fatalities but reigniting concerns over road safety on one of Nigeria’s most accident-prone highways.
Eyewitnesses said the truck suffered brake failure, veered off course, and collided with several vehicles on the bridge. Fortunately, no lives were lost, and a family travelling in one of the affected cars escaped unharmed.
Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), arrived promptly to manage the scene, assist motorists, and clear the road, although traffic was heavily disrupted for hours.

The Otedola Bridge has a history of serious accidents involving heavy-duty trucks, brake failures, and multi-vehicle collisions. In December 2025, three members of a family died in a collision involving an Audi and trucks on the bridge. Earlier in April 2025, another vehicle reportedly plunged off the bridge, leaving the driver seriously injured. Over the years, tanker explosions, falling containers, and multi-vehicle crashes have also been reported on this busy stretch.
Commuters and safety advocates continue to call on authorities to enforce vehicle maintenance standards, truck inspections, and speed regulations to prevent future accidents on the bridge, a key commercial route linking Lagos to southwestern Nigeria.
