Breaking: 100 bandits killed in counter-offensive in Niger, 61 bikes seized

The Police Command in Niger has announced the killing of about 100 bandits by the Joint Security Task Force, days after a series of attacks by the bandits.

Mr Bala Kuryas, its commissioner, said the bandits were neutralised on Wednesday in Bangi village of Mariga Local Government Area of the state .

He said some escaped with various gunshot wounds during the counter-offensive.

“We also recovered 61 motorcycles”, Kuryas said.

“We appeal to rural dwellers not to hesitate to report to the nearest security outfits any person or group of people with gunshots for security action.

” We have put in place sensitive security measures that will deal with any unforeseen circumstances in our area of supervisions.

” All we require from members of the general public is vital information that could aid our men on ground to deal with any form of security threats,” he said.

The Niger Government on Thursday lauded the State Taskforce for demonstrating high sense of professionalism during the gun battle.

Mr Emmanuel Umaru, Chairman, Joint Security Taskforce and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs gave the commendation.

“We are really making progress in the ongoing fight against banditry, kidnapping, cattle rustling and other criminal elements in our state.

“The exchange of fire between the gunmen and the Joint Security TaskForce and vigilante outfits led to the killing of many bandits.

The Commissioner regretted that one security official died during the operation.
