BREAKING: Adebayo Adedamola Wins PDP Ticket for 2026 Osun Governorship Election

Adebayo Adedamola has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for the 2026 Osun State election after securing a landslide victory in Tuesday’s primary held in Osogbo.

Adedamola polled 919 votes out of 957 cast by accredited delegates, according to the Chairman of the Primary Committee, Humphrey Abba, who announced the results. He noted that 20 votes were voided, while one aspirant had earlier withdrawn from the race.

“The candidate that got the remaining votes is Adebayo Adedamola with 919 votes and stands elected and returned,” Abba stated.

The primary went ahead despite the surprising inclusion of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s name on the ballot, only hours after news broke of his official resignation from the PDP. Voting began at 11:35 a.m. following delegate accreditation, with Committee Secretary Sunday Solarin clarifying that any vote cast for Adeleke—who had stepped down—would amount to “a waste.”

INEC officials and a PDP national delegation led by Abba supervised the exercise, which was conducted under heavy security provided by the DSS, police, and NSCDC.

Adeleke’s resignation letter, dated November 4, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Ward 2 Chairman in Ede North, cited the ongoing crisis within the party’s national leadership. His spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, confirmed the exit, which came amid uncertainty over his readiness to contest for a second term.

The PDP in Osun had previously hinted that Adeleke’s participation in the primaries hinged on timely resolution of the party’s leadership dispute and compliance with INEC’s requirements.

With political parties expected to submit candidate names by December 15, as stipulated in the INEC timetable for the August 8, 2026 governorship election, the emergence of Adedamola gives the PDP a clearer path as it works to stabilise ahead of the crucial poll.

The development marks a defining moment for the party, positioning Adebayo Adedamola as the new flagbearer while signalling a shift in Osun’s political landscape following Adeleke’s resignation.
