Breaking: Edo Assembly impeaches Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu
The Edo State House of Assembly on Monday impeached the state’s Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu.
This was carried out during the House’s plenary session in Benin City, the state capital, according to a report by Channels Television
Newstrends reports that Shaibu’s impeachment came after the adoption of the report of a seven-man committee set up by the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, that investigated allegations of misconduct against the deputy governor.
The impeachment is indeed the climax of the political impasse between Shaibu and the state governor, Godwin Obaseki.
The state House of Assembly commenced the impeachment proceedings against Shaibu last week.
Twenty-one of the 24 lawmakers signed a petition to that effect, said the Channels report.
They accused Shaibu of perjury and disclosure of the state government’s secrets.
The Speaker of the House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, at the plenary last Tuesday told the lawmakers that the seven-day ultimatum granted Shaibu to respond to the impeachment notice had expired.
The impeachment notice was served on Shaibu on March 6, 2024 and had to be done via a substituted service.
Agbebaku said the substituted service was published in the Nigerian Observer and the Vanguard Newspapers on March 12, 2024.
The Majority Leader of the House, Charity Aiguobarueghan, moved a motion that Justice Okungbowa be directed to set up a committee to probe the petition against Shaibu.
