BREAKING: Kano Gov Yusuf Dumps NNPP, Formally Rejoins APC

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a dramatic shift in the state’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Governor Yusuf officially announced his return to the APC on Monday in Kano, bringing an end to weeks of intense political speculation. The governor, who previously left the APC in 2022, said his decision was taken after extensive consultations and was driven by the need to align Kano more closely with the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu.

According to Yusuf, rejoining the ruling party would accelerate development projects, enhance security, and ensure Kano benefits more from federal interventions. He described the move as being in the “best interest of the people of Kano State,” insisting it was not motivated by personal ambition.

The defection has triggered a wave of political realignments in Kano. Reports indicate that 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, alongside nine federal lawmakers, defected with the governor to the APC. Several local government chairmen across the 44 councils in the state are also said to be aligning with the ruling party.

At the formal reception, Governor Yusuf flagged off the APC e-registration exercise in Kano, a move party leaders say is aimed at strengthening the party’s grassroots base and consolidating its structure in the North-West.

The NNPP, however, has strongly condemned Yusuf’s exit, describing it as a “betrayal of trust” and rejecting claims that internal crisis forced the governor out of the party. Party leaders insisted the defection would not weaken the Kwankwasiyya political movement in Kano.

Political analysts say Yusuf’s defection represents a major boost for the APC, especially as reports emerge that other sitting governors may also be considering joining the ruling party. The development is expected to significantly reshape political calculations ahead of 2027, particularly in Kano, a key electoral battleground.
