Unlike the permanent NIN, which remains unchanged for life, the Virtual NIN is designed for one-time or short-term use. Each token is linked to a specific organisation requesting identity verification and automatically expires after 72 hours, significantly reducing the risk of fraud, identity theft and unauthorised access to personal information.

The introduction of the Virtual NIN follows the enactment of the NIMC Act 2026, which modernises Nigeria’s identity management system and empowers the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to strengthen digital identity infrastructure, enhance data protection and improve identity verification services nationwide.

Under the new framework, banks, telecommunications companies, government agencies, healthcare providers, educational institutions and other authorised organisations are expected to migrate from collecting citizens’ permanent NINs to using the more secure Virtual NIN verification process. The transition aligns Nigeria’s digital identity ecosystem with global best practices, where temporary verification tokens are increasingly replacing the direct sharing of permanent personal identifiers.

Why every Nigerian should download the Virtual NIN now

One of the biggest advantages of the Virtual NIN is enhanced protection against identity theft. Every time a permanent NIN is shared with multiple organisations, there is an increased risk that sensitive personal information could be copied, stored or misused. By replacing the permanent NIN with a temporary encrypted token, the system ensures that citizens retain greater control over their personal data.

The Virtual NIN also improves privacy by ensuring that each generated token can only be used by the organisation for which it was created. For example, a token generated for a bank cannot be reused by a telecommunications company or any other institution. This merchant-specific design greatly limits opportunities for fraudulent use.

Another major benefit is improved security for digital transactions. Since the Virtual NIN expires automatically after a short period, even if the token is intercepted, it cannot be reused indefinitely, providing an additional layer of protection for users.

The new verification method is also expected to make accessing services more efficient. • Your 11-digit National Identification Number (NIN).
• The mobile phone number used during your NIN enrolment to receive a One-Time Password (OTP).
• A smartphone with internet access.

Unlike previous identity systems, there is no need to obtain a physical identity card before using the Virtual NIN service.

How to generate your Virtual NIN token

The process takes only a few minutes using the official NIMC Personal ID (MWS) application.

Users should first download the application from an official app store before entering their NIN. After receiving and confirming the One-Time Password sent to their registered mobile number, they will be required to create a secure four-digit PIN for future access.

Once logged into the application, users can select the “Get Virtual NIN” option, scan the requesting organisation’s QR code or manually enter its Enterprise ID. The system will immediately generate a secure 16-character Virtual NIN token, which can then be shared with the requesting organisation for identity verification.

Nigeria’s digital identity future

The NIMC Act 2026 represents one of the most significant reforms in Nigeria’s identity management framework since the establishment of the National Identity Management Commission. The law supports the Federal Government’s broader digital transformation agenda by strengthening identity verification, improving cybersecurity and encouraging the adoption of trusted digital services across both the public and private sectors.

Experts believe the Virtual NIN will play a key role in reducing identity fraud, improving public confidence in digital transactions and enabling more secure access to financial services, government programmes and online platforms.

Although physical identity cards and printed NIN slips remain valid where accepted, the Virtual NIN token is expected to become the standard method of identity verification as more institutions complete their migration to the new system.

Police bust suspected syndicate targeting Bolt, Uber drivers in Abuja

Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have arrested four suspected members of a vehicle theft syndicate accused of targeting Bolt and Uber drivers by posing as genuine passengers before robbing them of their vehicles and valuables.

The suspects, identified as Ibrahim Ismail, Ahmad Umar, Riskwa Shehu and Umar Abubakar, were apprehended by operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) following an intelligence-led operation aimed at dismantling criminal gangs involved in attacks on commercial ride-hailing drivers across Abuja.

Confirming the arrests, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, said the suspects were tracked and arrested on July 7, 2026, after police received credible intelligence about their activities.

According to her, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly specialised in targeting drivers operating on Bolt, Uber and other ride-hailing platforms by disguising themselves as legitimate passengers.

She explained that the suspects would book trips through e-hailing applications and lure unsuspecting drivers to predetermined locations, where they allegedly attacked the victims, dispossessed them of their vehicles and personal belongings, and fled the scene.

“The suspects operate by posing as regular passengers, booking commercial vehicles through e-hailing platforms before attacking the drivers and dispossessing them of their vehicles and other valuables,” Adeh said.

During the operation, police recovered two suspected stolen vehicles believed to have been taken from victims during previous attacks. The recovered vehicles include an ash-coloured Toyota RAV4 with registration number YAB 240 DL and a grey Honda Civic bearing registration number ABC 72 JP.

Investigators are working to establish the ownership of the recovered vehicles and determine whether they are connected to other reported cases involving attacks on ride-hailing drivers within the Federal Capital Territory and neighbouring states.

Police authorities also said efforts are ongoing to trace additional stolen vehicles, identify more victims and apprehend other members of the suspected criminal network who may still be at large.

SP Adeh confirmed that the four suspects will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The latest arrests form part of the FCT Police Command’s ongoing crackdown on organised crime, particularly syndicates targeting commercial drivers through digital ride-hailing platforms. In recent months, security agencies have intensified intelligence-driven operations to combat vehicle theft, armed robbery, kidnapping and related crimes within the nation’s capital.

The command has also urged drivers using Bolt, Uber and similar ride-hailing platforms to remain vigilant, carefully verify trip requests where possible and immediately report suspicious passengers or unusual travel patterns to security agencies.

Safety experts have similarly encouraged e-hailing drivers to make full use of in-app safety tools, including emergency alert features, trip-sharing options and identity verification systems, while avoiding isolated locations whenever possible without first assessing potential security risks.

The FCT Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting residents, tackling organised criminal networks and ensuring that all those involved in violent crimes are arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Four officers of the Nigeria Police Force have been arrested by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command for allegedly extorting N53,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr Musa Aliyu (SAN), during an illegal stop-and-search operation in Abuja.

The officers, who reportedly did not know the identity of their victim, allegedly forced the ICPC chairman to withdraw the money through a Point of Sale (PoS) terminal before sharing the cash among themselves.

Confirming the development while briefing journalists in Abuja on Monday, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale Sanusi, described the suspects as “criminals in uniform” who had abandoned their lawful duties to engage in extortion.

According to him, the officers mounted an unauthorised checkpoint around the Banex area of Wuse, where they allegedly stopped motorists and extorted unsuspecting members of the public.

“We have about four policemen in custody who successfully extorted somebody of high importance, unknown to them that this person is a highly placed person in society. In clear terms, they extorted the Chairman of the ICPC,” Sanusi said.

The commissioner disclosed that the officers compelled Dr Aliyu to visit a nearby PoS operator, withdraw N53,000, pay the transaction charges and hand over the money before they allegedly shared it among themselves.

“They extorted N53,000 from him. They took him to a PoS, he withdrew the money, paid the charges, and they shared the money among themselves,” he added.

Sanusi said investigations revealed that the officers had left their various duty posts and formed an illegal patrol team that operated around Banex solely to extort road users.

“They are a gang of criminals who left various divisions, clustered together, moved to Wuse Banex and created a checkpoint where they perpetrated this act before fleeing,” he said.

According to the police commissioner, the command immediately launched an investigation after receiving information about the incident. The officers were declared wanted before investigators arrested the alleged gang leader, whose confession led to the arrest of the remaining members of the syndicate.

He assured the public that the suspects would face severe disciplinary measures, including dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force where appropriate, as well as prosecution if criminal offences are established.

“We got all of them. We are going to make sure they are severely punished. Those that are going to be dismissed will definitely be dismissed,” Sanusi stated.

The commissioner also reaffirmed the directive of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, prohibiting officers from carrying out indiscriminate searches of citizens’ mobile phones during patrols or roadside operations.

He stressed that no police officer has the authority to compel members of the public to surrender their mobile phones for inspection without lawful justification.

“You cannot stop anybody on the road and ask the person to bring out his phone for a search. If any policeman stops you and asks to search your phone, don’t agree. Call the police emergency lines, and we will ask them why,” Sanusi warned.

He encouraged residents of the Federal Capital Territory and Nigerians across the country to promptly report cases of extortion, harassment and other forms of police misconduct, assuring that the command would continue to identify, investigate and sanction erring officers.

The incident comes as the Nigeria Police Force intensifies internal efforts to eliminate corruption, illegal roadblocks and professional misconduct within its ranks. Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun has repeatedly warned officers against extortion, abuse of office and violations of citizens’ rights, insisting that personnel found engaging in criminal conduct will face strict disciplinary action.

The alleged extortion of the nation’s anti-corruption chief has further renewed public concern over illegal stop-and-search operations and highlights the need for sustained police reforms, accountability and respect for the rights of all citizens, regardless of their status or identity.
