An Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court in the United Kingdom has denied bail to Ike Ekweremadu, former Deputy Senate President, and Beatrice, his wife, who were arrested over attempted harvesting of organs.
Daily Trust had reported how the Metropolitan Police arrested the Nigerian couple over an attempt to harvest the organ of an unidentified child.
When he was arraigned on Thursday, the court refused to grant him bail but ordered that he should be remanded till July 7.

In a statement confirming the arrest, the Metropolitan Police had said the pair were charged to court on Thursday following an investigation by the police’ specialist crime team.
“Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55 (10.9.66) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting,” the statement read.
“Ike Ekweremadu, 60 (12.05.62) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting. They have both been remanded in custody and will appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court later today.
“A child has been safeguarded and we are working closely with partners on continued support.”
FG summons Abuja Chinese supermarket owner to tribunal over discrimination
Director of Surveillance and Investigation at the FCCPC, Boladale Adeyinka, disclosed this on Monday after sealing off the outlet.
She affirmed that the owner of the supermarket, Cindy Liu Bei, had fled before the arrival of the agency’s officials.
The FCCPC officials stormed the supermarket on Monday, April 22, 2024, barely 24 hours after the discriminatory practices of the outlet were reported on social media by Nigerians.
Four vandalised towers disrupt power supply to Gombe, Yola, Jalingo
The TCN General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, disclosed this on Monday in a statement shared on the company’s official X handle, along with pictures of the vandalised towers.
According to the statement, the TCN noted that when the 330kV transmission line tripped, its operators attempted to restore it to service but it tripped again, prompting the dispatch of TCN lines men to trace the line to detect and rectify the fault.

It said, “While fault tracing, TCN’s engineering crew discovered that towers 288, 289, 290, and 291 were vandalised and that some tower members were carted away. Also, the towers had equally collapsed as a result of the incident. Presently, bulk power supply to Gombe, Yola, and Jalingo substations have been disrupted, affecting bulk power supply to parts of Yola and Jos Electricity Distribution Companies’ franchise areas.’’
The TCN however stated that it was trying to first backfeed Gombe through its 132kV transmission line from Bauchi and subsequently Ashaka, Potiskum, Damaturu, and Billiri/Savannah, to mitigate the effect of the incident on electricity consumers affected by the incident.
The company assured that it would do everything to ensure restoration of electricity to the affected areas, while efforts were made to reconstruct the four vandalised towers.
Updated: Owner of Abuja Chinese supermarket flees with family
Cindy Liu Bei, owner of an Abuja-based Chinese supermarket accused of discriminating against Nigerians, has fled the premises with her family.
The facility workers disclosed this on Monday when the officials of the Federal Competition and Consumer and Protection Commission (FCCPC) visited the place.
The supermarket situated at the China General Chamber of Commerce is said to only allow Chinese and not Nigerians to shop there.
This has created an uproar since the development was made public on Sunday.
When the FCCPC team visited on Monday, the workers said Bei, a Chinese lady that owns the facility, left the place in the morning around 8:26am with her family.
This was confirmed on the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) camera.
The FCCPC officials subsequently shut the supermarket.
Nigerians had expressed outrage over the discriminatory policy implemented by the Chinese supermarket.
The facility manager of the complex Shaibu Sanusi confirmed that Nigerians from outside the complex were not allowed to shop but only those within could access it.
While the supermarket remains shut, the consumer protection agency felt some people were hiding inside in a bid to avoid confrontation with the agency.
