CAF awards 2025: Reigning King Lookman ignored, Osimhen, Nwabali, nominated

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has released the official list of nominees for the 2025 CAF Awards, spotlighting several Nigerian footballers for their standout performances over the past season. However, the announcement has stirred debate due to some unexpected exclusions.

Leading Nigeria’s charge is Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen, who has been shortlisted for the prestigious Player of the Year Award. The prolific striker, widely regarded as one of Africa’s top talents, will face stiff competition from continental heavyweights including Mohamed Salah (Egypt), Achraf Hakimi (Morocco), Serhou Guirassy (Guinea), Pape Sarr (Senegal), and Zambo Anguissa (Cameroon).

In the goalkeeping category, Stanley Nwabali of Chippa United earned a nomination for Goalkeeper of the Year, following his stellar performances for both club and country. His consistent displays for the Super Eagles have drawn praise from fans and pundits alike.

Also flying Nigeria’s flag is Flying Eagles captain Daniel Bameyi, who made the shortlist for Young Player of the Year. The teenage defender’s leadership and composure throughout the season have cemented his reputation as one of the nation’s brightest prospects.

Despite these individual accolades, the Super Eagles were notably absent from the National Team of the Year category—a decision that has sparked criticism among Nigerian supporters and football analysts. Many argue that the team’s performances merited recognition, especially given the presence of multiple Nigerian players in individual categories.

Adding to the controversy, reigning Player of the Year Ademola Lookman was omitted from the shortlist despite a solid campaign with Italian side Atalanta. His exclusion has raised questions about the selection criteria and transparency of the nomination process.

The CAF Awards ceremony is slated for later this year, where Africa’s finest footballers, coaches, and national teams will be honoured for their achievements. As anticipation builds, Nigerian fans will be watching closely to see if their stars can bring home the continent’s top honours.
