China Condemns U.S. Capture of Maduro, Demands Immediate Release

China has called on the United States to immediately release Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife after a U.S. military strike on Caracas led to their capture. The Chinese Foreign Ministry described the operation as a “clear violation of international law” and Venezuelan sovereignty.

In a statement, Beijing urged Washington to ensure the personal safety of Maduro and his spouse, release them “at once,” and halt efforts to topple the Venezuelan government. The ministry emphasized that the use of force contravenes the United Nations Charter and basic norms of international relations, advocating instead for dialogue and negotiation to resolve the crisis.

The U.S. strike, which took place early Saturday, reportedly targeted government and military sites in Caracas and led to the capture of Maduro and Cilia Flores. President Donald Trump confirmed the operation, framing it as part of efforts to transition power in Venezuela, sparking international condemnation.

Global reactions have been swift. Russia called for Maduro’s immediate release, while France criticized the operation as a violation of sovereignty. Latin American governments, including Brazil, denounced the strike as a dangerous precedent. The United Nations Secretary-General expressed concern over the legality of the U.S. action, highlighting the need to respect international legal norms.

The situation has intensified debates over U.S.-Venezuela relations, raising questions about the legality and geopolitical consequences of foreign military interventions. Nations worldwide continue to call for restraint, diplomatic solutions, and adherence to international law to address Venezuela’s political and humanitarian crisis.
