Alaafin of Oyo Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade and Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State
Controversy as Alaafin Rejects Rotational Chairmanship of Oyo Obas’ Council
A major controversy has erupted in Oyo State following the inauguration of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, with the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, rejecting the new rotational leadership arrangement.
Governor Seyi Makinde inaugurated Oba Rashidi Ladoja, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, as the first chairman under the amended Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs Law, which introduces a two-year rotational chairmanship among the state’s three principal traditional rulers — the Alaafin, the Olubadan, and the Soun of Ogbomosoland.
The Alaafin was absent from the ceremony, a move interpreted as his disapproval of the rotational plan. His palace later clarified that the monarch did not endorse the rotation and had not been consulted prior to the inauguration. The palace emphasised that it upholds the historical primacy of the Alaafin stool and warned against decisions that could undermine Yoruba cultural heritage.

Governor Makinde defended the plan, describing it as a measure to promote unity, inclusivity, and shared leadership among Oyo State’s traditional institutions. While supporters say the rotation fosters collaboration, critics argue it diminishes the Alaafin’s authority and could spark further disputes within the state’s chieftaincy system.
The controversy has drawn reactions from various cultural and political stakeholders, including advocacy groups and Yoruba community leaders, who have called for dialogue to resolve the dispute and preserve the state’s rich traditional heritage.
As tensions continue, both the state government and palace authorities are expected to engage in consultations to manage the dispute and define the future governance of traditional councils in Oyo State.
