Coup Attempt Foiled: Defence Minister Musa Says He Was Targeted for Assassination

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd.), has disclosed that he was a primary target during the recent coup attempt, revealing that the plotters had planned to shoot him.

In an exclusive interview, General Musa said the failed coup, which sought to destabilize the government, involved a direct plan to eliminate key security and political figures, including himself. “I was to be shot. That was the plan, but thankfully it did not succeed,” he stated.

The Defence Minister, a former Chief of Defence Staff, praised the efforts of loyal military officers who foiled the coup attempt, preventing widespread chaos and loss of lives. He emphasised that the security agencies remain vigilant and that the government is committed to protecting citizens and safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.

General Musa also warned against complacency, noting that disgruntled elements within the military could still pose threats if unchecked. He urged Nigerians to trust the armed forces and maintain calm, assuring that national stability has been restored.

The revelation comes as investigations into the attempted coup continue, with authorities detaining and interrogating suspects. Security experts say the incident highlights the resilience of the Nigerian military and the critical role of intelligence and preparedness in averting national crises.

This disclosure underscores the gravity of Nigeria’s security challenges and the importance of strong leadership and loyal security forces in protecting the country’s democratic institutions.
