Court remands Indian for vandalizing cables at Dangote refinery

Akeem Nafiu Justice Daniel Osiagor of a Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the remand of an Indian, Nitheshi Kumar, in Ikoyi Correctional Centre, for allegedly vandalizing electric cables at Dangote Petrochemical and Oil Refinery Project, Ibeju- Lekki, Lagos. The order was sequel to Nitheshi’s arraignment by the police on a 2-count charge bordering on conspiracy, unlawfully removing, tampering, meddling with and interfering with cables and assembly of wires meant to be used at the refinery. The defendant, who is a water-tanker driver, however pleaded not guilty to the charge. Following Nitheshi’s not guilty plea, police lawyer, ACP Effiong Asuquo, sought for a trial date and asked that the defendant be remanded at a Correctional Centre pending the conclusion of his trial. Responding, defence lawyer, A. McAnthony, informed the court that he was just briefed of the matter, and needed a little time to file his client’s bail motion. After listening to the submissions of the two lawyers, Justice Osiagor ordered the remand of the defendant in Ikoyi Correctional Centre and adjourned further hearing in the matter to November 19.
