Customs intercept container from Canada, with shocking discovery
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Tin Can Island Command, has recorded a major breakthrough in its anti-smuggling operations, intercepting two containers laden with illicit drugs valued at over ₦5.3 billion.
Comptroller Frank Onyeka, Customs Area Controller, disclosed the seizures in Lagos on Friday, describing the operation as a testament to the command’s commitment to intelligence-driven enforcement and trade compliance.
According to Onyeka, the first container, numbered HLXU8500072, originated from Montreal, Canada, and was intercepted on September 4 following detailed intelligence analysis. A joint physical examination revealed 156 packets of Colorado Indica weighing 78 kilograms and 1.2 kilograms of Hashish Oil, all concealed within four imported vehicles.
The second container, numbered FANU312876/9, was seized on October 24 after actionable intelligence was received. It contained 2,081 packages of Cannabis Indica weighing 1,093 kilograms and eight packages of Crystal Methamphetamine weighing eight kilograms, also hidden in four vehicles.
Customs valuation placed the total worth of the seized narcotics at ₦5.304 billion.

Onyeka confirmed that the contraband had been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution. He commended the NDLEA, Nigerian Navy, Police, and other security agencies for their collaborative efforts in the operation.
“The command remains vigilant and uncompromising in enforcing Nigeria’s laws and trade conventions,” Onyeka said, urging importers and exporters to adhere strictly to customs regulations and ensure accurate documentation.
He also expressed gratitude to the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, for his unwavering support, and acknowledged the media’s role in public sensitisation.
Receiving the seized items, Commander of Narcotics, NDLEA Tin Can Strategic Command, Daniel Onyishi, lauded the Customs Service for its professionalism and vigilance.
“This operation reflects the strength of inter-agency collaboration in the fight against drug trafficking,” Onyishi said, assuring that the NDLEA would conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the legal disposal of the substances.
