Customs Seize Dane Guns, Ammunition At Ogun Border

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun 1 Area Command, has handed over five single-barrelled Dane guns, 1,433 rounds of live cartridges, 18 cartons of explosive materials, and 1,037 parcels of Cannabis Sativa to the Nigeria Police and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) respectively.

The prohibited items intercepted by the command’s anti-smuggling operatives between April 24 and June 18, 2025, had a combined Duty Paid Value (DPV) of over N344m.

During the handover ceremony held at the Idiroko Border on Wednesday, the Customs Area Controller, Godwin Otunla, said the firearms and explosives were intercepted across multiple flash points in Ogun State.

He attributes the success to “the blockage of revenue leaks, improved compliance, and the fostering of legitimate cross-border trade.”

Otunla stated, “The 1,037 parcels of Cannabis Sativa were seized during various patrols, and in keeping with inter-agency collaboration, are being handed over to the NDLEA.”

Other items seized within the same period include, “2,627 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice; a 2022 GLE Mercedes-Benz SUV; a 2014 MLS Mercedes-Benz SUV, and a 2011 Hyundai Elantra sedan; seven units of means of conveyance and 29 bundles of used pneumatic tyres”.

Otunla highlighted the Command’s strategy, saying the success was made possible through “heightened surveillance, strategic intelligence deployment, and synergy with security agencies and community stakeholders.”

He emphasised that transferring the contraband to the relevant agencies was not only required by the law but also reflected “inter-agency cooperation aimed at strengthening national security and public health.”

Otunla reaffirmed his resolve to intensify operations against smuggling, declaring, “We will sustain the heat on the smugglers and their collaborators.”

The Comptroller also disclosed that the Command significantly raised its revenue, from N10.6m in April 2025 to N42.2m in May 2025.
