Customs seize N71.7m petrol from smugglers in Adamawa

The Adamawa/Taraba Area Customs Command says it has seized petrol valued at N71,760,930 and other goods in its ongoing efforts to curb smuggling in the region.

Comptroller Garba Bashir Bature announced the seizure at a press conference on Friday, highlighting the command’s intensified operations.

The seized items include 33,595 litres of petrol, 200 bags of foreign flour, 57 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 10 bales of second-hand clothing, and three vehicles used for conveying the smuggled goods.

The petrol, packed in 1,115 Jerry cans and 26 drums, was intended for smuggling into the Republic of Cameroon.

The goods were intercepted at various border points in Adamawa and Taraba states.

Comptroller Bature attributed the success to his team’s relentless efforts, noting that the seized goods would be auctioned to the public, with proceeds remitted to the federation account in accordance with the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023.

Bature urged his men to remain vigilant and committed to combating smuggling within the law, while advising smugglers to abandon illicit activities and engage in legitimate business.

“We will maintain momentum until smuggling is eradicated,” he added.
