Dele Farotimi Slams U.S. Strikes on ISIS Targets, Says Nigeria’s Sovereignty Undermined

Human rights lawyer and social critic, Dele Farotimi, has condemned reports of United States military strikes on ISIS-linked targets in North-West Nigeria, describing the action as a violation of Nigeria’s sovereignty and a damning reflection of leadership failure.

Farotimi expressed his views in a post on his Facebook page, reacting to reports of U.S. involvement in counter-terrorism operations against terrorist elements operating in the region.

According to him, Nigeria’s sovereignty has been persistently weakened by its own leaders, whom he accused of lacking the political will and authority to independently secure the country’s territorial integrity.

Farotimi drew parallels with past regional military actions, recalling an incident in which France, under President Emmanuel Macron, allegedly influenced Nigeria to carry out a military operation in Benin Republic.

“Macron sent a now-disgraced Nigeria to bomb coupists in sovereign Benin,” Farotimi wrote, alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT) acted without proper legislative backing, thereby subordinating Nigeria’s sovereignty to foreign interests.

He argued that the reported U.S. strikes under U.S. President Donald Trump represent a continuation of what he described as a troubling pattern of foreign military intervention enabled by domestic leadership failures.

Farotimi further claimed that foreign powers are emboldened to act unilaterally in Nigeria because the country’s political leadership has failed to assert national independence or insist on accountability in matters relating to security cooperation and foreign military involvement.

His comments have added to the growing national debate over the implications of foreign military action in Nigeria, particularly concerns about sovereignty, transparency and constitutional oversight in security operations.
