Grenade Explosion Injures Female Soldier, Two Children in Nasarawa Residence

A routine cleaning exercise turned tragic on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, when a hand grenade detonated inside a residential compound along Abacha Road, Maraba, Nasarawa State, injuring a female soldier and two children.

The explosion occurred at about 11:46 a.m. after a woman reportedly brought out an explosive device discovered in her apartment and asked the soldier, identified as Mohammed, to help identify the object.

Preliminary findings, contained in an incident report cited by The PUNCH, revealed that the grenade had allegedly been stored in the apartment for about three years by an unidentified soldier who had previously served in Nigeria’s North-East conflict zone.

According to the report, the soldier’s sister—who lives in the same compound—found the grenade while cleaning her room. Unaware of its danger, she reportedly took it outside and asked Mohammed whether it was useful or should be discarded.

“Upon confirmation, the grenade exploded immediately, causing severe injury to Mohammed’s left wrist and other parts of her body,” the report stated. “Two children of the woman who brought out the grenade were also seriously injured.”

Following the blast, the injured soldier was rushed to Nagari Allah Private Hospital in Keffi before being transferred to the Defence Headquarters Medical Centre at Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja. She was later referred to Cedarcrest Hospital, Apo, where she is currently receiving treatment.

Medical sources confirmed that the female soldier’s condition has stabilised and that she is responding positively to treatment.

“Importantly, her condition has stabilised as she is responding to treatment. Investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances that led to the incident,” the report added.

When contacted, the Director of Defence Operations, Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja, said he had not yet been briefed on the incident as of the time of reporting.
