Domestic Violence Ends 39-Year Marriage of Senior Police Officers
A Customary Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, has dissolved a 39-year-old marriage between two senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force following persistent allegations of domestic violence, infidelity, and an irretrievable breakdown of the union.
The court ruled that the marriage between Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Gladys Faniyi and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Abayomi Faniyi could no longer be sustained due to years of conflict that endangered peaceful coexistence.
In her testimony, CSP Faniyi told the court that the marriage, contracted in 1986, was marked by physical abuse, emotional trauma, humiliation, and repeated acts of infidelity. She alleged that her husband routinely assaulted her and brought other women into their matrimonial home, despite repeated interventions from family members and colleagues.

She further stated that she had been solely responsible for the education and welfare of their children since their separation, adding that all reconciliation efforts had failed.
In his defence, ACP Faniyi denied most of the allegations but admitted that the marriage was fraught with constant disagreements. He accused his wife of being confrontational and acknowledged that physical confrontations had occurred during heated arguments.
After reviewing the evidence, the court held that the marriage had broken down irretrievably and granted its dissolution in the interest of peace. The court also ordered the respondent to continue supporting the welfare and education of the children and issued a restraining order preventing harassment or intimidation of the petitioner.
The judgment has reignited public discourse on domestic violence, particularly within the ranks of law enforcement, underscoring that abuse cases are not limited by profession or status.
