Domestic Violence Tragedy: Ogun Man Allegedly Kills Wife, Dies in Suspected Suicide

The Ogun State Police Command has launched a full investigation into a tragic domestic violence incident that led to the death of Ayobami Ayanwale, a mother of three, allegedly murdered by her husband, Ayoola Ayanwale, who was later found dead in what police suspect to be suicide.

The incident occurred on Thursday night at Olutayo Alao Street, River Valley Estate, Ojodu Berger, following a domestic dispute between the couple. Ayobami was reportedly stabbed multiple times by her husband during the altercation, sustaining fatal injuries. She was rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead by a doctor.

A further development emerged on Friday when Ayoola Ayanwale’s body was discovered in the Sotubo area, gasping for air in an open field before he eventually died.

Security sources disclosed that police operatives who responded to the initial distress call recovered three knives from the couple’s apartment and immediately launched a manhunt for the suspect. His body was later found with items including a vial containing a suspicious liquid, two mobile phones, a voter’s card, and an ATM card, which investigators say linked him directly to the earlier killing.

The couple’s three children have since been placed in the care of relatives.

A neighbour, identified on social media as @Irebamiolakanmi, alleged that the killing was the culmination of years of domestic abuse. She claimed the suspect stabbed his wife five times in the presence of their children, after allegedly instructing their first child to purchase sniper, a locally known toxic substance, which he poured into a pot of food.

According to her account, the deceased refused to eat the poisoned food, prompting the violent attack.

“She once told me she had peace only when her husband was not around. I advised her to leave the marriage, but she said she had three children,” the neighbour wrote, lamenting that the woman died just as she gathered the courage to escape the abusive relationship.

The deceased’s brother, who spoke to TVC, said Ayobami called him moments after she was stabbed.

“She told me her husband had stabbed her and asked me to start coming. I rushed from the highland, but before we arrived at the hospital, she had passed,” he said.

A young girl living with the family also told investigators that the suspect had given her money to leave the house on the night of the incident, claiming he was about to do something she should not witness. She further alleged that he had poisoned a pot of soup.

A friend of the deceased revealed that Ayobami had previously suffered physical abuse in the marriage, recalling an incident in August last year when she noticed bruises on her neck and advised her to move out—advice the victim reportedly hesitated to follow due to family pressure.

Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

“The case has been harmonised and transferred to the State CID for detailed investigation. The bodies of both individuals have been deposited at the mortuary,” Babaseyi stated.
