Updated: DSS invites Datti Baba-Ahmed over comments against Nigeria

The Department of State Services (DSS) has invited the 2023 Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, for questioning over comments security officials describe as inciting and potentially harmful to the stability of the Nigerian state.

Top security sources confirmed that the invitation followed concerns about Baba-Ahmed’s recent public remarks, which were viewed as capable of heightening national tension.

One DSS officer said the politician had, during a national television appearance, criticised the judiciary and the military for allowing the swearing-in of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. According to the source, Baba-Ahmed also made statements interpreted as “inciting the military,” claiming Tinubu’s inauguration emboldened them to “look you in the face and call you bloody fools.”

Officials warned that such rhetoric carried “dangerous undertones” given Nigeria’s sensitive political environment, adding that similar escalatory narratives had contributed to instability in countries like Guinea-Bissau.

“It has nothing to do with politics. The corporate existence of our nation could be threatened if such rhetoric is allowed to fester,” the officer said.

Another DSS insider explained that the invitation was preventive, not punitive, aimed at clarifying intent and preventing misinterpretation.

“Such invitations align with established security protocols. When public statements risk agitating sentiment or undermining trust in state institutions, a clarification becomes necessary. The goal is to prevent narratives that could unintentionally fuel unrest,” the source noted.

Baba-Ahmed had appeared on Arise News on Thursday, where he criticised the Federal Government’s plan to recruit additional security personnel. He also faulted the President’s advice to governors on the operation of boarding schools in high-risk areas, arguing that such policies could allow bandits to influence national decisions.
