Edo poll: Gov Obaseki couldn’t win couldn’t win his LG, Shaibu mocks

The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has taken a jab at Governor Godwin Obaseki following the outcome of the recently concluded 2024 governorship election.

Shaibu expressed his satisfaction after Obaseki’s loss in his local government area to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying he feels vindicated by the result.

During an interview with Arise TV on Monday, Shaibu stated that he bears no grudge against the outgoing governor but pointed out that Obaseki had never won an election on his own.

According to Shaibu, he had played a key role in securing the electoral victories that Obaseki had previously enjoyed.

Shaibu emphasized that the APC’s victory proves his political capabilities, countering claims that he couldn’t win the election.

“I feel vindicated; even the governor couldn’t win his local government. I won my unit, ward, and local government. Where are the governor’s results? He has never won; we always assisted him,” he stated.

The governorship position was keenly contended by Okpebholo, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party.

The APC candidate secured 291,667 votes, defeating Ighodalo, who garnered 247,274 votes. Akpata of the LP finished a distant third with 22,763 votes.

Newstrends reported that, Obaseki lost his local government, Oredo Local Government Area, to the APC.
