EFCC probes alleged ₦10 million extortion of Rapper Oladips during detention
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched a formal investigation into allegations made by Nigerian rapper Oladipupo Oladimeji, popularly known as Oladips, that some of its operatives extorted ₦10 million from him during his detention in 2024.
Oladips made the claims during a recent appearance on the Trending podcast, where he recounted being arrested in a midnight raid at his Lagos residence in November 2024. According to the musician, he was held for five days and released only after allegedly paying ₦10 million, despite no evidence of wrongdoing.
“They collected money (₦10 million) from me before they released me. They didn’t find anything on me. So, what was the money for? What was all that stress and suffering for? It’s just Nigeria. Nigeria just happened to me,” Oladips said.
In response, the EFCC issued a statement via its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, expressing deep concern over the allegations and confirming that an internal probe had commenced.

“The Commission wishes to state unreservedly that the grim picture painted by the artist does not reflect the true character of the EFCC,” the statement read.
The agency disclosed that officers involved in the operation have been summoned to its corporate headquarters and relieved of operational duties pending the outcome of the investigation.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and accountability, the EFCC stated: “The Commission is serious about its value of integrity and will take necessary action against any staff found to be culpable. It is also needful to state that if the allegation is found to be false and raised to malign the Commission or tarnish its image, appropriate sanctions will also be imposed.”
The EFCC urged the public to remain patient as the investigation unfolds, assuring Nigerians of its continued dedication to combating corruption and upholding ethical standards.
The case has sparked renewed debate over the conduct of law enforcement agencies and the need for greater oversight and accountability in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts.
