EKEDC urges customers to apply for free prepaid meters under federal initiative

EKEDC urges customers to apply for free prepaid meters under federal initiative

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has called on customers across its network to take advantage of the ongoing free prepaid meter distribution under the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI).

The programme, funded through the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) Tranche B and approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), aims to close the metering gap and eliminate estimated billing within EKEDC’s coverage areas.

Speaking at a customer engagement forum on Thursday at the Lekki Business Unit, the Acting Managing Director of EKEDC, Mrs Rekhiat Momoh, urged both new and existing customers to apply for the meters at no cost.

Momoh, represented by the Chief Commercial Officer, Mr Samuel Edoho, said the offer is open to Band A and Band B customers, with applications running from November 6 to December 31 through the company’s online portal.

“Meters and installation are completely free. No customer should pay anyone for processing or installation,” she stressed.

She disclosed that EKEDC had already installed over 15,000 meters under Tranche A, and more than 450,000 customers have been metered across its network to date.

Momoh also warned against fraudsters collecting money on behalf of EKEDC, insisting that vendors have been fully funded under government-approved metering schemes, including the National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP) and the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme.

She further cautioned customers against meter bypass or tampering, noting that it is a criminal offence under the Electricity Act 2023 and NERC regulations.

“Tampering attracts severe penalties, including fines, imprisonment and payment for stolen energy. Beyond that, it can cause electrical fires, equipment damage and even fatal shocks,” she said.

A community representative, Mr Ifeanyi Inuoha, commended EKEDC for the interactive session, urging the company to implement resolutions reached with customers to improve service delivery. He also pledged community support in curbing vandalism and energy theft.

“Security is everyone’s responsibility. We will continue to report meter bypassing and protect EKEDC infrastructure,” he said.
