Ex-IGP Mike Okiro Backs Tinubu’s Second-Term Bid, Cites Bold Reforms

Former Inspector-General of Police, Mike Okiro, has openly endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term, citing what he described as courageous leadership, tough economic reforms, and a clear vision for Nigeria’s future.

Okiro said President Tinubu assumed office at a critical moment in Nigeria’s history and took bold but necessary decisions, including the removal of fuel subsidy and reforms in the foreign exchange and security sectors. According to him, while the policies were initially painful, early signs now show they are laying the foundation for long-term economic stability.

The former police chief also praised Tinubu’s approach to national security, noting that structures put in place during his tenure as Lagos State governor helped shape effective security coordination models that are still referenced today. He argued that continuity in leadership would allow the administration to consolidate gains already made.

Okiro’s endorsement aligns with similar declarations from key political figures and groups across the country ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Recently, former Ogun State governor Ibikunle Amosun and other ruling party stakeholders have also publicly backed Tinubu’s re-election, stressing the need to sustain reforms and respect Nigeria’s power rotation arrangement.

Political analysts say the growing wave of endorsements signals early positioning within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as debates intensify over governance performance, economic recovery, and security challenges.

As Nigeria gradually moves closer to the next election cycle, endorsements such as Okiro’s are expected to shape internal party dynamics and influence broader national conversations on leadership continuity.
