Fake soldier, police, corper arrested, 153,256kg hard drugs intercepted

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency says it has said arrested 663 suspects in various states in the last one week, including a youth corps member, police officer and a soldier, all suspected to be fake.

The agency also said it had intercepted over 153, 256.876 kilogrammes of drugs within the same period.

It made this known in a statement by its Director of Media and Advocacy, Mr Femi Babafemi, on Sunday in Abuja.

He said that the NDLEA operatives had raided notorious drug joints in Lagos, Abuja, Benue and other parts of the country in the last week.

According to him, the raid led to the discovery of assorted illicit drugs weighing more than 153, 256.876 kilograms, which were either destroyed or seized.

“In Lagos, the notorious drug haven, Akala in Mushin area, was on Friday, Oct. 15, raided by a combined team of 70 NDLEA operatives and 30 soldiers, in a joint operation code named ‘ Operation Still Waters.’

“Not less that 27 suspects were arrested, while various drugs such as cocaine, Tramadol, Rohypnol and cannabis sativa, with a cumulative weight of 2,463.876 kg, were seized.

“A day earlier, operatives also raided drug joints in Ojo and Maryland areas of the state (Lagos), where six persons were arrested and different quantities of drugs seized.

“This followed another raid of Alhaji Lasisi street, Idioro, Mushin, as well as Okota in Oshodi-Isolo area during which 12 suspects were arrested and over 165kg of assorted illicit drugs recovered”, he said.

Bababfemi said that operatives on Friday, Oct. 15 also intercepted one Williams Esuabom along Ore- Shagamu expressway, Ogun State, with 562.5kg Cannabis being conveyed in a Toyota sienna bus.

He said that narcotic officers in a joint operation with soldiers, also raided Lafia park, Benue State, where six suspects, including a youth corps member, Paul Ndubuisi, were arrested with different quantities of drugs.

This came on the heels of the arrest of a suspected fake soldier Abel John, along Apir-Makurdi-Aliade road, with 3.5 kg of cannabis on Wednesday, Oct. 13,” he said.

Bababfemi said that a suspected fake Assistant Superintendent of Police Joshua Yusuf, who claimed to be serving in Kano, was arrested along Gwagwalada expressway while conveying 45.5kg of Cannabis.

“Three suspects were arrested during raids on Dabba and Luku village, Kaiama Local Government Area (LGA) of Kwara State, where over 64kg drugs were recovered on Wednesday, Oct. 13.

“In Ekiti State, NDLEA operatives in their numbers stormed the forest reserve along Uso Road, Ise-Orun LGA.

“They destroyed over 150,000 kilograms of cannabis being harvested on 40 hectares of land during an operation that lasted more than three days.

“The operation, which began on Tuesday Oct. 12, continued till Sunday, Oct. 17, ” he saidThe spokesperson said that no fewer than 615 suspects were arrested and illicit drugs, with a total weight of 3394.2031 kilograms, recovered in raids across other states.

Bababfemi quoted the Chairman, NDLEA, Retired Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa, as commending the officers and men of the Lagos State Command and their counterparts in Benue, FCT, Ogun, Ekiti and other parts of the country.

Marwa commended them for their resilience and commitment to the war against illicit substances, charging them not to rest on their oars.

He called for continued collaboration between the agency and other stakeholders, especially the armed forces and other law enforcement agencies.

Breaking: Military releases FirstNews editor, Segun Olatunji

The military has finally released Segun Olatunji, editor of FirstNews, who has been in their custody since March 15.

Olatunji was released on Thursday to Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) General Secretary Iyobosa Uwugiaren and The Nation Deputy Editor Yomi Odunuga under a bridge in Asokoro, Abuja.

It was also learnt that the documents for his release were signed inside a security vehicle with heavily armed operatives.

The security agents were said to be masked and the number plates of their vehicles covered up.

The editor was abducted by armed men in his home in Iyana Odo, Abule Egba area of Lagos, on March 15.

His family members were kept in the dark on his whereabouts and why he was arrested.

Several groups, including the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Nigerian Guild of Editors, almost daily mounted pressure on the government for Olatunji’s release.

On Wednesday, the Nigerian chapter of the International Press Institute said the journalist was in the custody of the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA).

A Federal High Court in Borno State has ordered the release of at least 313 suspected terrorists detained by the military.

The court ordered their release due to a lack of evidence to charge the suspects after the investigation.

Maj. Gen. Buba Edward, the Director of Defence Media Operations, announced this during the operational briefing on Thursday in Abuja.

Lagos court sends 25-year-old man to prison for stealing employer’s N54.1m

One David Ojonugwa has been remanded for allegedly stealing his boss’ N54,142,000 in Lagos State.

An Ebute-Metta Magistrates’ Court ordered the remand of the 25-year-old defendant on Wednesday.

Ojonugwa was arraigned by the police on three counts bordering on conspiracy, unlawful interference with property, and stealing.

He pleaded guilty to the charges preferred against him by the police.

Consequently, magistrate Adedayo Tella remanded Ojonugwa at the Correctional Centre and adjourned the case till April 24, 2024 for the review of facts and sentencing.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Francisca Job, informed the court that the defendant committed the alleged offences sometime in January 2024 at Lorange Water Factory, located at No 3, Olajubu Street, Ilupeju area of Lagos State.

Others are one injection machine module at N12m, injection machine module, N14m, one set of four cavity module bottles (150CL) at N9m, one set of four cavity module bottles (75CL), valued at N8m, one set of four cavity module bottles (25CL), valued at N5m, one electric for motor shrink wrapper (75KW) valued at N110,000, two floating switches for the bottled water line valued at N20,000, 200 stainless bolts and nuts for installation valued at N92,000, six stainless rods for the installation of the water line valued at N200,000 and 1,000 pieces of medium-sized catfishes valued at N40,000, items that were stolen by the defendant.

She said that the total value of the items stolen was N54,142,000, properties of one Mrs Teju Adeleke.

According to the prosecutor, the offences committed contravened Sections 411, 340, and 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
