Father, son, one other die inside well in Benue

The residents of Oju Township of Oju Local Government Area of Benue State have been enveloped by despair and sorrow after three persons suddenly died in the area.

The deceased persons, a father, son, and a Hausa trader, met their end while trying to retrieve a pale-fetcher from a well and save each other from the claws of death.

The youngest of the dead persons died after he was sent to the well by his father one Mr. Matthew Iji (commonly known as Matthew Ekpengbe), to get water for him.

Locals familiar with the incident said the fetcher fell into the well from the boy’s hand presumably aged between 15-16 years, while trying to scoop water.

The boy reportedly died while trying to retrieve the fetcher from the well.

The father, a popular car washer in the town, was alerted by passers-by, and he dashed to scene to rescue his son but fate had other plans as also died in the process.

According to the source, a Hausa trader who tried to evacuate the bodies of the victims from the well lost his life in what many consider a surreal occurrence.

The source revealed that the three bodies were rushed to Holy Cross Hospital, Oju, where they were all confirmed dead after efforts by the Chief Medical Director, CMD, of the facility, Joseph Ona, to resuscitate the victims proved futile.

The source added that sympathizers at the scene of the incident believed that the accident was not ordinary, and many attributed it to some spiritual attack.

The majority were of the opinion that the well must have contained contaminated air from oil spillage since it was close to a filling station.

An eyewitness said close observation of the deceased bodies did not show sign of drowning, as their bodies were not noticeably drenched or bloated.

The three corpses have already been taken to their respective places for burial.
