FG Orders Immediate Palliative Works on Lagos–Ota–Abeokuta Road

The Federal Government has ordered the immediate commencement of palliative repair works on the Lagos–Ota–Abeokuta Road to address severe road failures and restore smooth traffic flow along the busy corridor linking Lagos and Ogun states.

The directive was issued by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, during an on-the-spot inspection of the federal highway, which has been plagued by deterioration and traffic congestion.

Umahi disclosed that although about 22 kilometres of the road were assessed, urgent intervention would focus on roughly 18 kilometres of the most distressed sections.

He explained that the Federal Government is already managing about 60 kilometres of the road corridor, with construction works being carried out in phases based on the level of urgency and traffic impact.

According to the minister, the persistent failures on the road were caused by unresolved concession issues as well as incorrect engineering parameters adopted during previous construction.

Umahi said the palliative works would begin immediately, largely during night hours, to minimise traffic disruption, and would target failed sections currently obstructing the free movement of vehicles.

Low-lying failed areas will be reconstructed with concrete to ensure durability,” the minister said, adding that the Ota-bound carriageway has suffered more extensive damage than the Lagos-bound lane.

He further revealed that a second phase of the project would include full resurfacing, replacement of bridge expansion joints, and the installation of solar-powered streetlights to improve safety and visibility.

Umahi assured road users that once the ongoing repairs are completed, the concessionaire would be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the highway to ensure long-term sustainability.
