Royal Rift: Olubadan Ignores Alaafin’s Greeting, Sparks Debate on Yoruba Monarch Protocol

A perceived rift between two of Yorubaland’s leading traditional rulers — the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Akanmu Ladoja — has escalated following an incident at the Oyo State annual inter‑faith service, reigniting debates about royal protocol and hierarchy in the state.

The episode occurred on Monday, January 12, 2026, at the Oyo State Secretariat Grand Space, when the Alaafin extended a greeting to the Olubadan. Eyewitnesses noted that the Olubadan, however, did not reciprocate, choosing instead to exchange pleasantries with Governor Seyi Makinde and other dignitaries before taking his seat. The gesture drew public attention and sparked discussions on social media about respect among Yoruba monarchs.

In reaction, Ibadan traditional stakeholders — including Mogajis, Baales, and community leaders — issued a warning to the Alaafin, condemning what they described as disrespect to the Olubadan stool and the Ibadan traditional institution. They described the act as “an embarrassment of the highest order” and stressed that any future affronts could provoke stronger responses from Ibadan authorities.

Observers noted that the incident is part of ongoing supremacy debates among Yoruba monarchs, particularly between the Alaafin, Olubadan, and Ooni of Ife, which have periodically surfaced over the years. Analysts say the tensions highlight deeper issues regarding traditional norms, respect, and leadership roles within contemporary Yoruba society.

The Alaafin and Olubadan had previously held a closed-door meeting with Governor Makinde in December 2025 to foster dialogue and maintain peace, though details of the discussions were not made public. Meanwhile, critics point out that past attempts to position the Alaafin as permanent chairman of the Council of Obas and Chiefs contributed to historical sensitivities with Ibadan indigenes insisting on rotational leadership among monarchs.

The latest development underscores the delicate balance of cultural diplomacy, tradition, and political engagement in Oyo State and across Yorubaland, with many calling for sustained dialogue to preserve the dignity and unity of Yoruba traditional institutions.
