Fire Guts FIRS Office in Abuja, No Casualties as Investigation Begins

A fire outbreak on Saturday affected one of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) offices in Abuja, causing panic but leaving no casualties, the agency has confirmed.

Videos shared on social media showed flames engulfing parts of the building, prompting emergency response efforts in the area. In a statement signed by Sikiru Akinola, Technical Assistant (Print Media) to the FIRS Executive Chairman, the agency said the incident occurred at its office located at No. 15 Sokode Crescent, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.

According to the statement, the fire broke out on the fourth floor of the building but was swiftly tackled by FIRS security personnel, with support from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service and other emergency responders.

“The fire was successfully contained and prevented from spreading further. We are grateful to report that no lives were lost, although several offices on the affected floor sustained damage,” the statement said.

FIRS disclosed that an investigation into the cause of the fire has commenced, with preliminary findings suggesting a possible electrical fault. The agency added that its internal safety protocols are being reviewed and strengthened to prevent future incidents.

The Abuja incident comes months after a tragic fire outbreak at Afriland Towers, Broad Street, Lagos, in September, which claimed the lives of four FIRS staff members. The victims were identified as Ekelikhostse George and David Sunday-Jatto, both assistant directors; Nkem Onyemelukwe, a senior manager; and Peter Ifaranmaye, a manager.

FIRS reiterated its commitment to staff safety and assured the public that further updates would be provided as investigations continue.
