Former Senate Minority Leader Simon Mwadkwon Defects to APC
Former Senate Minority Leader and ex-lawmaker representing Plateau North, Simon Mwadkwon, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a move that could reshape political alignments in Plateau State ahead of the next general elections.
Mwadkwon announced his decision during a visit to APC elders in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, where he formally declared his entry into the ruling party and sought the support of grassroots leaders.
According to the former senator, the defection followed extensive consultations with his constituents, political stakeholders, family members, and associates across Plateau North.

He described the switch as a strategic political realignment designed to strengthen collaboration and improve representation at the national level.
“This realignment is driven by the desire to work more effectively with leaders who share a commitment to improving governance and ensuring that the voices of our people are heard at key decision-making levels,” he said.
The development signals a major boost for the APC, particularly in Plateau North, where Mwadkwon remains an influential political figure.
The former minority leader also revealed plans to contest the Plateau North senatorial seat on the APC platform in the 2027 general election, setting the stage for what could become a highly competitive race.
Political observers say the move reflects ongoing shifts within Nigeria’s political landscape as politicians reposition ahead of future contests.
With his defection, attention is expected to turn to how the PDP responds and whether more high-profile figures will follow a similar path in the coming months.
