Former University Vice Chancellor Arraigned for N19.7 Million Fraud in Katsina

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned Professor Armaya’u Hamisu Bichi, former Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Dutsinma (FUDMA) in Katsina State, for allegedly committing fraud, bribery, and contract kickbacks totaling N19.7 million during his tenure.

Professor Bichi appeared before the Katsina State High Court on Thursday, February 5, 2026, alongside two co-defendants, Lawal Tukur Mani and Aliyu Lawal Jari, who are accused of acting as conduits for receiving illicit payments from contractors seeking university contracts.

The EFCC stated that in July 2023, Bichi received a N5 million bribe from Goezek International Agency Nigeria Limited in exchange for awarding contracts for the supply of medical equipment and laboratory furnishings at FUDMA. The funds were allegedly routed through the co-defendants’ accounts, in violation of Section 79(a), (b) & (i) of the Penal Code Law of Katsina State, 2021.

Prosecution counsel Salihu Sani requested that the court fix a trial date to hear witnesses, while defence lawyers A.L. Yusuf and Raphael Henry filed separate bail applications. The court granted bail of N5 million per defendant with one surety each and adjourned the matter to March 12, 2026, for the commencement of trial.

The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to prosecuting individuals accused of corruption and abuse of public office, particularly in academic institutions, emphasizing the importance of accountability and the proper use of public funds.
