Fubara Dismisses Rivers Impeachment Move, Calls It a “Love Letter”

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has dismissed the ongoing impeachment proceedings against him and his deputy as a “love letter,” insisting he remains the duly elected governor. His remarks came amid a tense standoff with the Rivers State House of Assembly, which has accused the governor of misconduct and other alleged governance failures.

Fubara addressed the matter during a public engagement in Port Harcourt, assuring residents that he would continue to govern Rivers State effectively despite the legal and political drama. He also urged calm, calling for peaceful resolution while warning that governance would not be derailed by political manoeuvring.

Court Intervenes in Impeachment Saga

In a key development, a Rivers State High Court issued a temporary injunction halting the impeachment process against Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu. The court order prevents the Chief Judge and the Assembly from acting on the impeachment notice for seven days, pending further hearings.

The Assembly, however, maintains that its actions are constitutional and justified, asserting that the impeachment notice had already been formally delivered and acknowledged. Support and Opposition Grow

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers condemned the impeachment, calling it politically motivated and warning that it could destabilise the state. Conversely, some civil society groups have backed the impeachment, citing alleged governance lapses, including controversies over the state budget.

Political analysts say the standoff reflects a persistent executive-legislature gridlock in Rivers State, which has implications for governance stability and public confidence in the region.
